BERKELEY, Calif. – Falling in a close game at Haas Pavilion, Stanford men’s basketball dropped a 72-66 contest to California. The Cardinal moves to 16-11 on the season and 5-9 in ACC action.
Aidan Cammann led the scoring with a career-high tying 19 points, to go with six rebounds and two blocks, while setting new career bests in free throws (11) and free throw attempts (19). The 19 free throw attempts are tied for 20th most in a single game this season across the country and second most by any player in the ACC, trailing only teammate Ebuka Okorie’s 21 vs. Colorado (Dec. 20).
Okorie posted the first double-double of his career, ending the afternoon with 17 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Okorie is the first Stanford freshman guard on record (since at least 2006) to secure at least 13 rebounds in a game, and he was the first freshman guard at Stanford with double digit rebounds since Tyrell Terry on Nov. 25, 2019 against Oklahoma.
Continuing his ascent through the Cardinal record books, Okorie moved into 14th place on Stanford’s single-season scoring list, passing Claude Terry (1970-71), Anthony Brown (2014-15) and Keith Jones (1982-83) against the Golden Bears. He also tied for fifth on Stanford’s freshman 3-pointers list, passing Jeremy Green (2008-09).
Benny Gealer and AJ Rohosy finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively, with Gealer notching his fourth straight game with at least three triples and is seventh in a row with at least two. Gealer finished with two steals, while Rohosy added six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Cal (19-8, 7-7 ACC) earns its first regular season sweep of Stanford in 16 years, dating back to 2009-10, while Stanford drops its first of the last five meetings with the Bears away from Maples Pavilion.
The Golden Bears took an early 14-7 lead, but Stanford quickly cut it to two, 18-16 with 7:44 remaining, led by nine points from Okorie. Rohosy scored Stanford’s final six points of the opening frame, but Cal led at the half, 39-25.
Stanford outscored Cal by eight in the second half, 41-33, and cut the deficit as low as five in the period. Cammann scored 13 of his 19 in the second half, and Gealer added 12 over the final 20 minutes, but Cal held on late for the win, withstanding a late 7-0 run over the final minute.
Stanford returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25 against Pittsburgh. The 5 p.m. tip will air on ACC Network.
