Pair of ACC Weekly Honors for Women's Tennis

Cardinal takes home Co-Freshman of the Week and Co-Doubles Team of the Week accolades

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford picked up a pair of honors when the conference announced its weekly award winners on Tuesday. Monika Ekstrand was named ACC Co-Freshman of the Week for the second time and Ekstrand and senior Caroline Driscoll were selected as the ACC Co-Doubles Team of the Week.

Ekstrand picked up her second straight award with another pair of outstanding performances. She again went undefeated across singles and doubles in a pair of ACC duals, collecting three ranked wins in four total matches.

In singles, Ekstrand beat Georgia Tech’s No. 50 Alejandra Cruz 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the Cardinal’s ACC-opening victory over the Yellow Jackets on Friday. It was her team-leading fourth clincher of the year and fifth victory over a ranked opponent (including fall). Ekstrand is an unbeaten 3-0 against ranked opponents in duals.

The freshman is now 8-1 during the dual season, all at the No. 1 spot.

Ekstrand and Driscoll also went 2-0 in doubles, the pair beating their first two ranked opponents of the year. They picked up a 7-5 win over Georgia Tech’s No. 52 Cruz and Nayuki on Friday and followed that up with a 6-3 win over Clemson’s No. 26 Groen and Okuwaki on Saturday. They’ve now won four in a row after losing four straight to close the month of January.

The Cardinal continues ACC action this weekend when it hosts Wake Forest and NC State.
