CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Eight different goal-scorers led the way as No. 2 Stanford held strong on offense and defense, dispatching No. 21/18 Virginia on Saturday afternoon, 16-8. With the win, Stanford moves to 6-0 and a perfect 3-0 start in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action.
Stanford opened the game on a 4-0 run in the first quarter against the Cavaliers, highlighted by Lindsey Devir’s brace inside the first 15 minutes. Devir opened the scoring in the game from the eight-meter hash before securing her second of the day to open a three-goal lead after Mallory Hasselbeck put Stanford ahead by two. Annabel Frist nabbed her first of the day to continue the barrage, finishing off a seeing eye feed from Hasselbeck as Stanford led 4-0 inside the first 10 minutes of the contest.

With UVA earning a free-position tally late in the first, Martha Oakey snatched her lone goal of the afternoon while Aliya Polisky earned her first of the day to push the Cardinal ahead 6-1 through the first 15 minutes. On the defensive end, Stanford’s Lucy Pearson made two saves in the period while the Cardinal forced UVA into four turnovers in the early grudge match.
Stanford, though, continued to claim territory in the Virginia end in the second as Polisky opened the scoring in the frame with her second while Lexi Rodell pushed the Cardinal ahead, 8-1, finishing off an Ava Arceri feed in front. Following a UVA tally, Devir and Polisky tacked onto the Cardinal lead as the Cardinal led by eight with less than five minutes to go in the half. Though UVA tallied late in the half, the Cardinal defense kept the Cavaliers to five shots in the frame while forcing UVA into four turnovers as Stanford led, 10-3 into the break.
Though the third quarter saw both sides trade blows, the Cardinal continued to rely heavily on its defensive prowess. With UVA tallying the first two goals of the half, Stanford went back on the attack, snatching back a six-goal lead as Hasselbeck secured her second of the day. Stanford then locked the gates and allowed just one goal from the Cavaliers in just over 13 minutes of elapsed time heading into the midway point of the fourth quarter. With a Polisky woman-up tally and a Frist free-position tally, the Cardinal took a 13-6 lead into the final quarter before Hasselbeck’s hat trick tally pushed the score to 14-6.
Defensively, the Cardinal continued to close out UVA, allowing two goals in the final five minutes in the game while Jordyn Case and Arceri rounded out the scoring. Olivia Rose and Rylee Bouvier combined for seven of Stanford’s 13 caused turnovers while Lucy Pearson made five saves in a full-Cardinal effort en route to a 16-8 win.
No. 2 Stanford is back in action on Tuesday, March 3, taking on NR/RV Virginia Tech in the finale of the two-game road stretch. Opening draw from Thompson Field is slated for Noon ET / 9 a.m. PT.
