STANFORD, Calif. — In the first home matches of 2026, top-ranked Stanford beach volleyball won the opening matches of the Battle of the Bay tournament over a pair of West Coast Conference foes. The Cardinal swept both San Francisco and Santa Clara 5-0 to improve its record to 7-1.
The Cardinal cruised through the opening match of the day against San Francisco. Several pairs won by at least 10 points, including Indigo Clarke and Rainie Stevens, who took their opening set on court two 21-10 before closing out the second set 21-12. Line Andersson and Daria Gusarova had a huge advantage early and took care of business on court four, 21-17 and 21-6.
Stanford clinched against San Francisco in short order on court three, with Charlotta Bell and Logan Tusher (21-9, 21-17). Avery Jackson and Brooke Rockwell were consistent on the top court, winning 21-13 in both sets, while Mikke Carlin and Sophie Kubiak overcame a late scare from the Dons on court five to win 21-9 and 21-18.
In the afternoon match, the scores were a bit tighter, but Stanford took control in the middle portion of the early matches to get two quick points on the board. Jackson and Rockwell were on court two and picked up their second wins of the day, while Bell and Gusarova teamed up on court four to win 21-15 and 21-13.
The biggest battle of the day for Stanford came on court five. Elena Fisher and Chloe Hoffman fought off a late charge from the Broncos, who tied the match at 20-20 and forced the first set into bonus points. Stanford routinely got a serve for set point, but the Broncos continued answering until a Hoffman kill ended it at 25-23. They went on to win 21-16 in the final set to close out the Friday sweep for the Cardinal.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow for the second day of the Battle of the Bay, with two more matches on tap against UC Davis (10 a.m.) and Saint Mary’s (2 p.m.).
