Cardinal Stung by Georgia Tech

Stanford loses in Atlanta, 74-52

ATLANTA – Lara Somfai had a career-high 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but Stanford dropped one on the road at Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon, 74-52.

The Cardinal never led, getting within six, 45-39, midway through the third quarter when Hailee Swain made a driving layup. But the Yellow Jackets closed the period on a 10-2 run and Stanford wouldn’t cut it to single digits the rest of the game.

Stanford went through some extended droughts in a game in which it shot 32.8 percent, its third-worst mark of the season. The Cardinal didn’t score for a nearly six-minute stretch in a seven-point second quarter, had another four-minute drought in the third, and didn’t score in the game’s final four minutes.

Georgia Tech, which came in shooting 26.1 percent from deep, last in the ACC, made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and nine in the game, their second most this season and most since November.

Led by Somfai, Stanford’s freshmen combined to shoot 17-of-39 from the floor (43.6 percent), while the rest of the team only managed to make 5-of-28 (17.9 percent).

Somfai put up 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists one game after she had 15 points, 23 rebounds and eight assists at Pittsburgh. On Stanford’s road trip, she averaged 17 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists. Hailee Swain had 10 points, her fifth consecutive game in double figures. Alexandra Eschmeyer put up nine points and eight boards.

The Cardinal returns to action when it hosts Virginia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
