Best in Battle of the Bay

Top-ranked Stanford finishes weekend 4-0 at home

STANFORD, Calif. — The Battle of the Bay rolled on Saturday at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium, with top-ranked Stanford playing two more matches. Despite lineups looking a little different from those a week ago, the results were largely the same. The Cardinal swept UC Davis 5-0 and beat Saint Mary’s 4-1 to improve its record to 9-1.

Moving up to the second court against the Aggies, Ofure Odigie and Ashley Vincent survived a tightly contested first set (21-17) before going on a massive early run of 9-1 before closing it out 21-8 to earn the first point for the Cardinal. On court four, Line Andersson and Daria Gusarova dropped the opening set, took command in the second set, and then endured a thrilling battle in the third set before securing set point at 22-20 to put Stanford up 2-0 early.

Shortly thereafter, the Cardinal clinched the match on court five after Elena Fisher and Chloe Hoffman won in short order (21-8, 21-16). Elsewhere, Kelly Belardi and Ruby Sorra went to bonus points in the first set but won 23-21 before winning by nine in the second set, and Indigo Clarke and Clara Stowell capped off the sweep for Stanford on court three.

The Card got off to a great start against Saint Mary’s in the afternoon match, with quick victories on courts four and two. Fisher and Hoffman moved up to court four to earn a win, while Odigie teamed up with Avery Jackson on court two and got two more set wins with scores of 21-19 and 21-13.

It was less smooth in the final matches, but Stanford prevailed to close out the weekend with a win. The clincher came on court one, where Belardi and Sorra got past Saint Mary’s with scores of 21-15 and 21-13. The fourth point came from Charlotta Bell and Logan Tusher, who scored a win with a third-set victory of 15-7.

Stanford will head to Southern California next weekend for the MPSF Midseason Rumble, with four matches over two days beginning on March 6 against Oregon and LSU.
