PCCSC South Designate Win

Card notches three top-two finishes

BERKELEY, Calif. – Another full weekend of competition for Stanford sailing resulted in three more top-two finishes, including a win at the PCCSC South Designate. The three results bring the Card to 30 top-three finishes on the season, in just 33 tries.

The PCCSC win was also the team’s 19th first-place finish of the season, and 10th in 12 spring races.

“I feel that this team is really finding its stride. We know we have the ability to win, that's never really been in question,” said head coach Chris Klevan. “The question was always whether we, as a group could elevate each other. I feel like we’re answering that question better daily and finding a confidence that comes from truly trusting your teammates.”

At the PCCSC South Designate, both Cardinal boats finished first. The A boat of Thomas Whidden and Caroline Geiger finished first three times in 10 tries, never finishing worse than third to end with 20 points. Second place went to Hawaii, finishing with 27.

The B boat featured Samara Walshe at skipper and Avery Baldwin crew for the first eight races, before swapping roles for the final two races. The duo won six of 10 races to tally 33 points, well clear of second place UCSB’s 43.

The Szambecki Team Race saw the Card finish just shy of a victory, going 9-4 to trail Georgetown’s 10-3 record. Ellie Harned, Piper Blackband, Freddie Parkin, Amiya Stroumza, Dylan Sih and Kate Myles all competed for the Cardinal.

Stanford finished the competition with back-to-back wins, topping Georgetown and Navy. Navy ended with a fourth place finish, just back of the Cardinal at 8-5.

Rounding out the weekend’s competition was the Friis Trophy, hosted by Harvard. The Card went 14-5 to finish second, just behind the hosting Crimson at 17-2. Stanford was represented by Lucas Woodworth, Abby Baird, Vanessa Lahrkamp, Alice Schmid, Reade Decker and Callie Hammond.

Next up for Stanford is a scrimmage with Tulane at home, as well as the Dellenbaugh Women’s Team Race.
