No. 2 Stanford suffers first loss to No. 17/15 Boston College, 13-11

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — No. 2 Stanford battled hard in a top-20 matchup on Thursday, taking No. 17/15 Boston College to the brink before ultimately falling to the Eagles on the road, 13-11. With the loss, Stanford ends its best start to a season since 2021 with a 10-game win streak having earned the 10-0 mark for just the second time in program history.

Aliya Polisky led the Cardinal with a team-high three points while nine different players tallied in the contest marking the eighth time this season that Stanford had eight or more different goal scorers. Ella Morton tallied eight saves - five of which came in the second half - while Olivia Rose snagged three caused turnovers as she now ranks tied for seventh all time in career caused turnovers with 64.

Stanford (10-1, 6-1 ACC) had its work cut out from the beginning as the hosts jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. BC’s Marissa White bookended the 3-0 run for the Eagles having opened the scoring just under three minutes into the contest before snatching the three-goal lead with under five minutes to go in the first.

However, Stanford went on a roll to cut into the Eagles lead with Jordyn Case opening the Cardinal account with a signature dodge for her first of the contest. The Cardinal followed the Case tally with Peep WIlliams finding Ava Arceri with just under two minutes left in the frame to cut the lead to one.

Seizing the momentum to start the frame, Stanford claimed the first three goals of the frame, culminating in a 5-0 scoring run. Annabel Frist teamed up with Aliya Polisky to level the scoreline before Peep Williams gave the Cardinal its first lead of the game from the eight-meter hash. Just 20 seconds later, Polisky opened her scoring account on the power-play after finishing off a dish from Arceri to give Stanford its largest lead of the game.

The Eagles, though, stormed back with help from the eight-meter hash, leveling the scoreline 5-5 with consecutive free position tallies halfway through the second quarter. After BC took the lead on a Molly Driscoll tally, Annabel Frist snagged her second goal of the day in the final minute of the half as her deflected shot beat BC’s Shea Dolce to put the Cardinal level. However, a late transition tally from the hosts saw the Eagles take a 7-6 lead into the break as Stanford was unable to cash in on its last chance of the half.

In a back-and-forth second half, Stanford jumped out of the gates, retaking the lead following a goal from Rylee Bouvier and a free-position score from Martha Oakey. BC, though, counterpunched with a pair of goals from Molly Driscoll that saw BC take the lead at 9-0. In what was a contentious third quarter, Stanford brought the final scoring touch of the frame as Amanda Lawson’s dodge found paydirt to level the scoreline, while Ella Morton provided four saves in the frame as the game went deadlocked, 9-9, through three quarters.

In the fourth, Stanford kept the fight after falling down by two inside the first two minutes after BC struck from the eight-meter hash and on the power play. Lexi Rodell brought the Cardinal within one following a sinister tally on a free-position attempt while Polisky ripped home her second with under four to go to answer a late BC tally.

However, the Cardinal could not find the elusive tying goal as the final chance for Stanford was stopped by Dolce in the waning stages before the hosts added a late insurance tally to take the 13-11 win.
