REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- The Stanford men’s rowing program, 121 years old, opens its season with the Redwood Shores Invitational on Saturday and Sunday on its home course.

Six schools are competing, including Cal, Oregon State, San Diego, Santa Clara, and UC San Diego.

Action begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with a Cal dual against Oregon State. Stanford faces UC San Diego at 9:10 a.m. Racing continues Saturday until 3:20 p.m. on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course, and from 9 a.m.-10:20 a.m. on Sunday.

On April 30, 1904, Stanford made its intercollegiate men’s rowing debut in a dual against Cal at the Oakland Estuary. In the 121 years since, men's rowing has established itself as one of the great traditional programs among Stanford sports. Stanford was the first West Coast team to enter the IRA Championships, in 1911.

Stanford competes against UC San Diego on Saturday morning and Santa Clara (2:10 p.m.) on Saturday afternoon, and San Diego (9:10 a.m.) on Sunday.

Among several Cardinal returners is Elliott Donovan-Davies, a second-team All-American and the MPSF Freshman of the Year last season, who rowed in the No. 7 seat in 12 of his 14 races, including the IRA Championships B Final. Also back is Tom Corbett, who rowed in the stroke seat in all but one race, Gabriel George who was in the No. 2 seat on the 1V8 in every race last season, and Luke Smith who was in the 1V8 in all 15 races, 13 of those in the No. 5 seat.

The Cardinal will also have a 3V8 boat racing for the first time since IRAs in 2019. That will go at 3:10 p.m. on Saturday against Santa Clara.
