REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Stanford boats closed out the Redwood Shores Invitational with undefeated records over the weekend.
The first, second and third varsity eights combined for a 7-0 weekend on the 2,000-meter Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course.
Action started on Saturday morning with Stanford beating UC San Diego in first varsity and second varsity matchups in impressive times. The Cardinal 1V8 covered the course in 5:36.0. The Cardinal 2V8 won in 5:48.5.
In the afternoon, the Cardinal 1V8 earned a 23-second victory over Santa Clara, in 5:32.1. And in the 2V8, Stanford earned a 31-second victory, in 5:42.3.
A weekend highlight, Stanford’s 3V8 finished the course in 5:46.8 against the Broncos to pick up a win a long time coming. It was the first time the Cardinal had raced a third varsity since the IRA in 2019. Stanford had been unable to field three eights since due to the sport discontinuation during COVID, so Saturday was the first time in nearly seven years Stanford had a full team on the water racing.
The undefeated weekend finished with Stanford winning handily against San Diego on Sunday. The 1V8 clocked 5:44.8 to USD’s 6:08.4. The Cardinal 2V8 was timed in 5:59.1 to USD’s 6:23.4.
Stanford’s 1V8 featured six returnees from the boat that placed ninth at the IRA National Championships, with coxswain Gabrielle Zammit, stroke Tom Corbett, No. 7 Elliott Donovan-Davies and No. 2 Gabriel George in the same seats in the season’s first race against UC San Diego. James Pullinger was at No. 5 after rowing in the bow last year, and Luke Smith (No. 5 last year) opened in the bow.
The 1V8 also included three newcomers: Sandro Scalfi in the No. 6 seat, Hylton Harvey at No. 5 and Finn Lorgen at No. 4. Scalfi rowed in the No. 6 seat in the 1V8 once last season.
In the 1V8’s second and third races of the weekend against Santa Clara and San Diego, Corbett and Donovan-Davies switched seats.
The 2V8 consisted of five returners – coxswain Kannan Alford, Caspar Griffin, Charlie Vachris, Maxim Ericson, Leopold Hainlein – and four freshmen making their collegiate debuts – Kalen Routley, Tyler Murphy, Marcus Albrecht and Augustine Freijo.
The stern four remained the same in all three races with Griffin in stroke, Routley at No. 7, Murphy at No. 6 and Albrecht at No. 5. Against UCSD, Vachris was at No. 4, Ericson No. 3, Hainlein No. 2 and Freijo in bow. For the final two races, Ericson (No. 4) and Vacharis (No. 3) and Friejo (No. 2) and Hainlein (No. 1) switched seats.
Stanford’s 3V8 included five freshmen and four returners. The newcomers were coxswain Ginger Bernstein, stroke Danny Stephenson, No. 6 Raph Hardwick Skottowe, No. 5 Matteo Hanna-Amodio and No. 4 Christopher Muehl. Junior Callen Berwick and the bow three were junior Jack Griffin (No. 3), senior Jacob Rivera (No. 2) and junior John Salvi (No. 1).
Stanford next competes March 26 and 27 when the Cardinal heads East for the Sarasota 2K in Florida. Stanford will take on Washington and Harvard on the 26th and Washington, Harvard, Brown, Yale and Northeastern on the 27th.
