Cardinal in Dallas to Wrap Up Regular Season

Final match before ACC Tournament comes Sunday at No. 30 SMU

  • Stanford (11-8, 7-4 ACC) concludes its regular season at No. 30 SMU (14-6, 6-5 ACC) on Sunday, April 12 at 10 a.m. PT/noon CT.
    • The Cardinal is 4-0 all-time against the Mustangs and has not dropped a point in the four meetings, beating SMU by a combined score of 21-0.
  • This will be the first dual against SMU in Dallas. The two teams have met three times on The Farm and once at ITA Indoors in Madison, Wis. in 1988.
  • Stanford is No. 47 in the ITA rankings released on April 7 and has three players in the singles rankings in Valerie Glozman (#15), Monika Ekstrand (#32) and Alyssa Ahn (#52).
  • The Cardinal is coming off its best win of the season, a 4-0 sweep at rival and No. 23 California on Tuesday afternoon.
  • The result was Stanford’s highest-ranked victory of the year, surpassing a 4-0 win over then-No. 59 Georgia Tech on February 20, and pushed Stanford’s all-time record against the Golden Bears to 83-16, including 36-9 in Berkeley.
  • The Cardinal’s No. 1-ranked freshman class has picked up three ACC Freshman of the Week honors this season.
    • Monika Ekstrand was a back-to-back Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 17 and 24. She leads the team with six clinchers and has seven victories over ranked opponents (including fall). Ekstrand is an unbeaten 5-0 against ranked opponents in duals. The freshman is 13-2 during the dual season, all at the No. 1 spot.
    • Tianmei Wang was the conference’s first ACC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 20 after going 3-0 in singles, including a 6-3, 6-0 win over Cal’s 63rd-ranked Naomi Xu. Wang has been on a tear since the calendar turned to March and has won six straight and is 8-2 against ACC opponents this season.
    • Ekstrand and senior Caroline Driscoll were also selected as the ACC Co-Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 24 after beating their first two ranked opponents of the year. They first picked up a 7-5 win over Georgia Tech’s No. 52 Alejandra Cruz and Seri Nayuki and followed that up with a 6-3 win over Clemson’s No. 26 Jade Groen and Rinon Okuwaki.
  • Stanford's fall was highlighted by Glozman capping an incredible start to her sophomore season by winning the ITA Women's All-American singles title in late September, beating Carmen Herea of Texas in the final, 6-2, 6-3.
    • She became the first champion from Stanford since Hilary Bartein 2010 and the fourth all-time, joining Patty Fendick (1987), Sandra Birch (1989, 1990) and Barte.
    • Her victory also edged the Cardinal in front of Florida for the most ITA All-American women's singles titles of all time with five.
  • Freshman Alyssa Ahn burst onto the scene in her second tournament for Stanford, winning the ITA Northwest Regional Championships singles title in mid-October with a 6-0, 6-1 throttling California's Naomi Xu.
    • Ahn became the second consecutive freshman winner of the tournament for the Cardinal, following Valerie Glozman in 2024. Stanford has now produced the tournament singles champion in 13 of the last 15 years.
  • Both Glozman and Ahn qualified for the NCAA Single Championship in Orlando in November with Glozman the event's No. 1 seed. Her win at All-Americans also secured the sophomore All-America status.
  • Ahn, along with Monika Ekstrand and Tianmei Wang comprise the nation's No. 1 recruiting class. All three are blue-chip recruits according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.
  • It was a strong summer for the Cardinal, highlighted by Stanford participation at the US Open.
    • Glozman and Ahn both earned main draw wild cards, Glozman by winning the women's singles title at the American Collegiate Wild Card Playoffs in June and Ahn by winning the singles title at the USTA Billie Jean King Girls' 18s National Championships.
    • Ekstrand received a women's qualifying draw wild card, while Wang received a wild card into the girls' singles main draw.
  • Stanford is in its second season under head coach Frankie Brennan. Last year, the Cardinal put together a 17-9 record, making its 43rd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and its 42nd trip to the Round of 16.
    • Since joining the staff in 1996, Brennan has enhanced Stanford's reputation as the country's top program by helping guide the Cardinal to a 728-88 overall record, 12 NCAA championships, 21 conference regular-season titles and six conference tournament crowns. During his tenure, Brennan has mentored 39 All-Americans.
