Match Play Finals Bound

Martín Sampedro ties ACC scoring record

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The impressive weekend of golf continued for top-seeded Stanford women’s golf, taking down fourth-seeded and No. 10 in the country Duke 3-0 in the ACC Championship semifinals to earn a spot in the finals for the first time in program history.

Duke won its quarterfinal match against NC State earlier in the morning, 3-1, to set up a highly anticipated semifinal between two of the best teams in the country. The winds picked up shortly after the first tee, and that played right into the hands of the Cardinal.

A couple of sophomores took commanding leads early and never looked back. Andrea Revuelta won three of her first four holes against Katie Li, taking advantage of two bogeys and a double bogey by Li. Revuelta really put Li on shaky ground on the seventh hole, when Revuelta knocked down an eagle to move to 4up, and at that point, the decision was never in doubt. She secured the first point after halving 14 with Li to wrap up a dominant 5&4 win. The win moves Revuelta to 2-1 in match play this season.

Shortly after Revuelta clinched her match, Meja Örtengren did the same. Like her teammate, she opened up a huge lead early, winning four of the first five holes and making it appear like the match was over. Avery McCrery fought back and twice brought it to within two holes, but McCrery bogeyed on 16, which gave the match to Örtengren in a 3&2 final. Örtengren had four birdies in just 16 holes, and like Revuelta, is now 2-1 in match play this season.

The deciding point came from none other than Megha Ganne, who continues to deliver for the Cardinal in some of the biggest moments. Her match against Andie Smith was full of par putts through the first six holes before Smith bogeyed on seven, giving Ganne the first advantage. A Ganne bogey on 11 tied the match, but then Ganne recovered with a birdie on 12 to reclaim the lead. It had the makings of a match that would see 18, but Ganne won the final two holes, sinking a par putt on 16 to end it and send Stanford to the finals on Sunday.

Stanford will face upstart SMU for the 2026 ACC title. The Mustangs entered the tournament as the sixth overall seed in the conference, but finished stroke play in second, and beat North Carolina 3-1 to advance to the finals. First tee is at 6 a.m. PT, with live coverage of the entire match on ACCNX.
