PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Edan Cui’s five-under round catapulted the Stanford freshman into contention for an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title as the Stanford men’s golf team wrapped up second round action at the ACC Men’s Golf Championships on Friday. Stanford, which shot 10-under during Friday’s second round, leads the tournament at 23-under overall.
Cui entered the day tied for second overall alongside teammate Dean Greyserman as both Cardinal sat at 4-under through 18 holes. Cui started the day with two birdies along the back nine to finish with an unblemished 34 as he hit the turn. Looking to seize momentum, Cui nabbed consecutive birdies on holes one and two to jump out to a 4-under card before bookending a bogey on hole seven with birdies on holes six and eight as Cui snagged the third-best individual round of the day to finish with a 5-under, 67. Cui stands alone at the top of the individual leaderboard at 9-under overall.
Slotting into the top 10 after 18 holes, Jay Leng surged up the leaderboard on Friday, rifling a 4-under, 68 during the second round. Leng snagged three of his five birdies on the day through the first nine holes, hitting the turn with a 34 on the scorecard. Leng then shot a perfect front nine, hitting two birdies including one on his final hole of the day. Leng slots in tied for third at 6-under overall.
Nathan Wang and Dean Greyserman slot in the top 10 after two rounds with both golfers ending the day at 4-under overall. Wang, who entered the day at 3-under, nabbed a 1-under, 71 on Friday. The senior earned one of his four birdies on the back nine while the front nine proved fruitful as Wang snagged three birdies to end the day at 1-under. Greyserman also shot well on Friday, hitting three-straight birdies on the back nine to open the day. Though Greyserman hit a rough patch on the front nine, the senior grabbed his final two birdies to end the day at even-par to tie with Wang for a share of ninth overall.
Cooper Stearns also shot well during Friday’s second round earning one birdie and snagging Stanford’s lone eagle of the day. Stearns earned a birdie on his first hole of the day before hitting the turn at 3-over. Stearns snagged the eagle on hole three as he ended the day at 4-over for the round and 8-over overall as Stanford’s reserve score.
Stanford is back in action for the final round of stroke play on Saturday, April 25 with a chance to advance to its first-ever appearance in ACC Men’s Golf match play with a top eight finish. The Cardinal tees off from hole one at 8 a.m. CT.
