Cardinal Faces BYU in NCAA First Round

Stanford making its 44th consecutive postseason appearance

  • Stanford will be making its 44th consecutive postseason appearance when first round competition gets underway at campus sites this weekend.
  • In Malibu, California, the Cardinal (13-10) will face Big 12 Tournament quarterfinalists, No. 36 BYU (19-8). The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 11 Pepperdine (18-4) and No. 50 UC Santa Barbara (17-8) on Saturday, May 2. The host Waves are the tournament’s No. 11 seed.
    • Stanford is 3-1 all-time against BYU and has won the last three in a row, most recently sweeping the Cougars 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
  • The most decorated program in college history and the winningest program on The Farm, Stanford has won 20 of the possible 43 NCAA championships.
    • Stanford owns a 171-24 all-time record in the postseason since the NCAA Tournament went to its present format in 1982.
    • The Cardinal has won 21 national titles overall in school history, also claiming the 1978 AIAW crown.
    • Stanford has reached the NCAA quarterfinals 39 times in 43 NCAA Tournaments.
  • The Cardinal opens on the road for the first two rounds for just the third time since the NCAA adopted its present format in 1999.
    • Last season, Stanford went to Lubbock, Texas and knocked off FIU (4-1) and the 11th-seeded host Texas Tech (4-1) to advance to Super Regionals
    • In 2021, the Cardinal opened with a 4-0 win over UC Santa Barbara before losing in the second round to host Pepperdine, 4-2.
  • Stanford is 62-10 during the month of May since 2010, a stretch that has produced five NCAA championships.
  • Stanford is No. 29 in the ITA rankings released on April 21 and has three players in the singles rankings in Valerie Glozman (#26), Monika Ekstrand (#30) and Alyssa Ahn (#57).
  • Last Thursday, freshman Monika Ekstrand was voted to the six-person All-ACC Singles First Team and freshman Alyssa Ahn landed on the All-ACC Singles Third Team.
    • Six total freshmen were among the 19 honored on All-ACC singles teams and Stanford is the only school with multiple.
  • Ekstrand was a back-to-back ACC Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 17 and 24. She leads the team with six clinchers and has eight victories over ranked opponents (including fall). Ekstrand is a 6-2 against ranked opponents in duals and is 14-5 overall during the dual season, all at the No. 1 spot.
    • Ranked No. 30 in the latest ITA singles rankings, Ekstrand is the fifth-highest ranked freshman in the country.
  • Ahn, an NCAA Singles Championship qualifier in the fall, has been just as good during the spring.
    • Playing exclusively at No. 2, the freshman is 11-4 in duals, including 9-2 since the calendar flipped to February. She is 11-2 against ACC opponents this season and 7-5 against ranked foes (including fall). Her first career clincher came in three sets against No. 85 Sophie Llewellyn and delivered the Cardinal a 4-3 win over then-No. 25 SMU in the third round of the ACC Championship.
  • Stanford is in its second season under head coach Frankie Brennan. Last year, the Cardinal put together a 17-9 record, making its 43rd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and its 42nd trip to the Round of 16.
    • Since joining the staff in 1996, Brennan has enhanced Stanford's reputation as the country's top program by helping guide the Cardinal to a 730-90 overall record, 12 NCAA championships, 21 conference regular-season titles and six conference tournament crowns. During his tenure, Brennan has mentored 39 All-Americans.
