BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 47 Stanford picked up a signature win with a 4-0 sweep of rival and No. 23 Cal in Berkeley on Tuesday afternoon.
The result was the Cardinal’s highest-ranked victory of the season, surpassing a 4-0 win over then-No. 59 Georgia Tech on February 20, and pushed Stanford’s all-time record against the Golden Bears (10-6, 7-4 ACC) to 83-16, including 36-9 in Berkeley.
Stanford (11-8, 7-4 ACC) grabbed the elusive doubles point with wins from its pairs on courts two and three to seize the early momentum. The freshman duo of Alyssa Ahn and Tianmei Wang beat Sophie Hernandez and Berta Passola Folch 6-2, and Valerie Glozman and Sein Myoung were 6-3 winners over Laura Cilekova and Naomi Xu.
The Cardinal kept rolling in singles, with Myoung making an emphatic first statement, beating Anya Murthy at No. 5 6-0, 6-0. Wang has been on an absolute tear since the calendar turned to March and added to her recent run of success with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mille Johanna Moerk at No. 4 6-2, 6-1. The freshman has won six straight and is not 8-2 against ACC opponents this season.
As she’s done much of the year, the clincher came from Monika Ekstrand on the top court with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 13 Berta Passola Folch. Ekstrand has clinched six of Stanford’s 11 victories this season and is now 5-0 against ranked opponents in duals. Passola Folch is the highest ranked player the Cardinal freshman has beaten this season.
Stanford closes out the regular season at No. 30 SMU on Sunday, April 12 at 10 a.m. PT.
