de Vries Decides on Stanford

Third-team All-MAC selection the Cardinal's second portal addition this offseason

STANFORD, Calif. – Ilse de Vries, a veteran of the Netherland’s youth national team program and starter at Miami University, has transferred to Stanford for the 2026-27 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining, Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women’s Basketball Kate Paye announced Tuesday.

A 6-foot-3 forward from Groningen, Netherlands, de Vries started all 35 games for the RedHawks last season and averaged 12.7 points on 49.4 percent shooting, including 38.6 percent from deep, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 30.5 minutes per game. She was a third-team All-MAC selection and earned a spot on the All-MAC defensive team. de Vries set a school record with 65 blocks and made 59 three-pointers, making at least one in 30 games, and scored in double figures 24 times.

“Stanford felt like the perfect place for me because it combines high-level basketball with great academics,” de Vries said of her decision. “I really liked the coaches, the team and the opportunities that the university provides its students. I’m grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to be a part of the family.”

de Vries was one of 11 players in the country last season to average what she did in points (12.7), rebounds (4.9) and blocks (1.9), and was one of three players at her height to make 50 3-pointers and shoot better than 38.0 percent from deep.

As a freshman, de Vries played in 27 games, made 25 starts, and averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

de Vries has appeared in four FIBA-level youth tournaments for the Netherlands. Most recently, she averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in seven games at the FIBA U20 Women’s EuroBasket in Portugal in August 2025. The summer prior, she averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds as the Netherlands won the FIBA U20 Women’s EuroBasket Division B title in Sofia, Bulgaria. She also appeared in a pair of FIBA U18 Women’s European Division B Championships in 2023 and 2022.

“Ilse is a fantastic young woman and we’re so happy that she will be joining us at Stanford,” Paye said. “She is a versatile player who is coming off a breakout season and has extensive international experience playing for the Netherlands at FIBA events around the world. She has the goal to play professionally after college, and we’re excited to work with her to help her achieve that dream. Everyone we spoke with about Ilse raved about the type of person and player that she is. She’s a bright student who is really looking forward to studying at Stanford and we cannot wait for her to get to campus.”

de Vries is the fifth undergraduate transfer in Stanford women’s basketball history and second this cycle, joining Inés Sotelo from Michigan State. She’s the Cardinal’s fifth announced newcomer in 2026-27 along with Sotelo and freshmen Kiara Green, Elyse Ngenda and Jordyn Wheeler.
