CARLSBAD, Calif. — Nathan Wang’s superb 4-under card highlighted a successful second round as the No. 15 Stanford men’s golf team ended the second round of action at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Stanford, which shot 2-under for the round, ended the day at 1-over for the tournament and tied for 12th place.
Wang’s dominance was on full display along Omni La Costa’s front nine as the senior rattled off five birdies as part of an unbelievable bogey-free run. Nabbing birdies on five of his first seven holes of the day, Wang hit the turn at 5-under before grabbing three more birdies during the round on the back nine. The senior ended the day with his 11th round in the 60s this season with his 4-under, 68 card as he slots tied for 43rd at even-par through two rounds.
Also dominating the front nine with a bogey-free front nine, Dean Greyserman improved off an even-par outing on Friday with a 3-under card on Saturday, snatching five birdies during the round. Greyserman entered the turn at 3-under before grabbing his fourth of five birdies on a fortuitous hole 10. The senior battled back from a double bogey on hole 14 with a birdie on the par-5 hole 18 to end the day at 3-under par which is good for 21st overall.
Turning in a 1-under card on Saturday, Edan Cui also had much of his luck on the front nine, turning in three birdies at the turn. The Freshman then overcame a tough last few holes with three important saved strokes on holes 10, 15 and 16 as he ended the afternoon with a 1-under, 71 card. Cui enters Sunday’s third round at even-par and tied with Wang for 43rd overall.
With four birdies on the day, Jay Leng had another strong outing for the Cardinal on Saturday. The sophomore snagged three of his four saved strokes on the front nine as he hit the turn at 2-under par. Leng finished the afternoon having birdied his first hole past the turn before some late round trouble pushed him into a 6-over card for the round as he sits at 4-over for the tournament.
Serving as the reserve score for Stanford, Cooper Stearns earned his first appearance in the NCAA Championship stroke play finals with a 9-over card. The freshman snatched three birdies on the day including one on his final hole of the round to end the day at 9-over as the sub score.
Stanford is back in action for the third round of action at 8:20 a.m. PT with Ethan Gao teeing off from the first tee.
