STANFORD, Calif. – Sixteen Stanford men’s rowers and coxswains were named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The criteria was at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, the athlete must be in their second or more year of eligibility, and must have competed in a program’s top three boats.
Those honored from the Cardinal varsity eight that raced in the IRA Championships were: Tom Corbett, Elliott Donovan-Davies, Gabriel George, Caspar Griffin, James Pullinger, Sandro Scalfi, Luke Smith, Gabrielle Zammit.
Stanford placed sixth in the first varsity eights at the IRA National Championship, the 11th top-six finish in program history and just second since 2010.
Stanford was seventh in the second varsity eights. Those on the 2V8+ at the IRA’s who also were Scholar-Athletes were: Kannan Alford, Leopold Hainlein, Hylton Harvey, Charlie Vachris and Philip Wolfensberger.
Honored from the 3V8+ that raced at IRA’s for the first time since 2019 and finished 11th were: Jack Griffin, Andrew Orio and Jacob Rivera.
Overall, Stanford was fifth in the Ten Eyck Trophy points standings at this season’s IRA National Championship with 209 points, tying a program record for best finish with another fifth-place result in 2009. The Cardinal was awarded the Clayton Chapman Trophy at the conclusion of racing, which is given to the school that accumulates the greatest year-over-year increase in its Ten Eyck total point count. Stanford’s point total in 2025 was 148, a 61-point improvement. Stanford won the Chapman Trophy once previously, in 2016.
