The Farm Report: September 7

A career night by Lizzy Andrew led No. 4 Stanford in a 25-17, 25-18, 30-32, 25-15 win over South Florida, Thursday, it its home opener at Maples Pavilion.

Andrew, a junior middle blocker from Ridgefield, Washington, hit a season-high .500 with a career-best 17 kills and a career-high 12 blocks for her first collegiate double-double.

In a complete team effort, No. 4 Stanford defeated Marquette, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-12, Sunday, in Maples Pavilion.

Stanford (4-0) hit a season-high .307 as a team, while holding Marquette (2-3) to a .171 clip. The Cardinal improves to 4-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

Stanford improves to 117-14 at Maples Pavilion under Kevin Hambly, The Montag Family Director of Women’s Volleyball, who is in his 10^th season at the helm of the program.

After a thrilling win to begin the 2026 campaign, Stanford football earned a pair of weekly awards from the ACC. Micah Ford was named ACC Running Back of the Week, and Atticus Joseph landed ACC Rookie of the Week.

Ford carried the ball 25 times for 99 rushing yards with three touchdowns, and had 85 of his rushing yards in the first half. He was the only running back in FBS to have multiple rushing touchdowns in Week 0, and the first Stanford back with 90+ rushing yards and three touchdowns in a game since Bryce Love in 2017.

Joseph was one of three Stanford wide receivers to make his collegiate debut against Hawai'i. He had the best game of the bunch, catching four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. His performance helped him grade out as the fourth-best receiver in FBS for Week 0, per PFF.

Ford was also named the Shrine Bowl Offensive Player of the Week and quarterback Davis Warren earned Senior Bowl Offensive Player of the Week honors in his Stanford debut. 

 Logan Tsopanoglou netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season to lift No. 1 Stanford to a decisive 1-0 road victory over San Jose State on Friday evening.

The Cardinal (5-0-0) remains undefeated following a rock-solid defensive performance that limited the Spartans to just one shot in the contest. Stanford moves to 29-13-8 all-time in the series with its Bay Area foe.

"Just pleased with a good, solid performance tonight," said Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn. "We had a few chances in the first half that I thought we could've scored goals from, but we passed and moved the ball quite well. I was really pleased with how hard we worked at the back, as well as the attacking players to really help protect."

The deciding moment came in the 36th minute off a free kick, as Joshua Partal's service found Dylan Groeneveld in the goal area, where his header to the front of the net set up Tsopanoglou to finish from inside the six-yard box.

Junior Jaden Thomas managed a hat trick and an assist as No. 1 Stanford (6-0-1) blanked Santa Clara (2-2-3) 4-0 on Sunday afternoon from Stevens Stadium.

With the Cardinal leading 1-0 following a Charlotte Kohler goal in the eighth minute, Thomas found the back of the net in the 18th, 27th and 51st to piece together the hat trick.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart was credited with her third shutout of the season after making four saves.

Having wrapped up the nonconference slate, top-ranked Stanford will now turn its attention to ACC play beginning with a match on the road at No. 2 Duke next week. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. PT on Sunday from Durham, N.C.

Helping guide Stanford to a 2-0 week that included a 3-0 shutout of No. 17 UCLA on Thursday and a 7-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, freshman midfielder Sadie Leal-Schuman and junior defender Sammy Smith have been named ACC Freshman and Defender of the Week, respectively.

The conference weekly honors are the first of both players’ careers, and run Stanford’s 2026 season total to four selections. London Young earned Freshman of the Week on August 18 following the first week of competition, and junior Charlotte Kohler was selected co-Offensive Player of the Week on August 25 following week two.

Leal-Schuman finished the two matches with one goal and three assists for five points in 163 minutes played. The freshman contributed an assist on each of the first two goals against the Bruins on Thursday before adding a goal and an assist on Sunday vs. Cal State Fullerton. The native of Orinda, Calif. notched an Olimpico goal in the 30th minute on Sunday, bending her corner kick into the net for her first career goal. Leal-Schuman has contributed four assists in the last three matches, and has compiled six points this season (1 goal, 4 assists).

Smith anchored the Stanford back line last week, playing all 180 minutes as the Cardinal posted the pair of shutouts. The native of Boise, Idaho helped limit No. 17 UCLA and Cal State Fullerton to a combined 16 total shots, including just six on frame. With Smith starting all five matches at defender, the Cardinal has opened the 2026 season with five consecutive clean sheets for the first time since recording a shutout in the first nine of the 2014 campaign.

The No. 3 Cardinal took down No. 9 Pepperdine 14-6 in Malibu. Freshman Dimitris Chatzis set a high-water mark for Stanford this season, scoring six goals in the victory.

On Sunday, Stanford moved to a perfect 4-0 this season with a road win at No. 13 UCSB today. The Cardinal led by just a pair of goals at halftime, but outscored the Gauchos 13-4 after halftime to head back to The Farm with a 24-13 win. Botond Balogh led the offense with six scores and three assists.

Stanford’s next game is Sunday at No. 10 Pacific, scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. PT

Outside hitter Julia Blyashov has been voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.

Blyashov anchored the Stanford defense in a pair of four-set wins over No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 15 Kansas at the Opening Spike Classic in Pittsburgh. The senior averaged 4.88 digs per set to go with 2.50 kills and 2.69 points per set.

Against the Badgers, she recorded a career-high 25 digs, six kills and an ace. She followed up with a double-double against the Jayhawks, posting a team-high 14 kills, 14 digs, a block and two assists. 

It marks the first career weekly honor for Blyashov, whose 4.88 digs per set was the highest average by an ACC player last week. Stanford now boasts 194 weekly awards all-time dating back to its time in the Pac-12 Conference, including 31 Offensive, 44 Defensive, 7 Setter and 39 Freshman.

Stanford field hockey continued its torrid pace to begin the season with a clinical, 5-0 win over the visiting Bellarmine Knights on Friday. With the win, Stanford earns its best undefeated start to a season since 2021 while starting 4-0 for the first time in the Roz Ellis era. 

“It feels really good,” said Susan Ewing York Director of Women’s Field Hockey Roz Ellis. “The girls put a lot of work in during the offseason and we didn’t have to start at ground zero. They’ve been working really hard and have earned each of this wins to start the season.”

“Both of these next two teams are going to pose different challenges,” said Ellis. “But I am excited for us to step up to the challenge and keep rolling with the wins.”

Stanford is back in action for its first road trip of the season as the Cardinal embarks to the East Coast for a pair of bouts. Stanford opens the road schedule on Friday, September 11 with an evening battle against Holy Cross before finishing the road trip on Sunday, September 13 against Northeastern. First strike against the Crusaders is slated for 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.
