REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Stanford picked up three more first-place finishes this weekend, topping the PCCSC Women's Fall Championships, Top-9 Invite as well as the Nickerson Trophy. With the finishes, the Card has now won 11 of 16 fall competitions to kick off the season.
"I think all the coaches would agree that there's something here resembling a team of championship quality," said head coach Chris Klevan. "The toughness and stick-with-it-ness required to pursue the gains found when no one else is looking (at you and for them) is what's required to get there. I look forward to seeing if the team will go searching for those small wins as the off-season approaches."
The Cardinal took first in PCCSC Women's Fall Championship with 74 points. Alice Schmid, Avery Baldwin, Ashtyn Tierney and Kir Harned all competed in the A boat, which took second with 46 points. The B boat of Ava McAliley, Alexandra Jones and Piper Blackband took first with 28 points. The B boat took first in dominant fashion, winning nine of 14 races.
Stanford took first at the Top-9 Invite as well, leading the field with 108 points. The A boat of Dylan Sih, Lucas Woodworth, Audrey Russler and Avery Peterson finished second with 65 points. The B boat of Thomas Whidden, Samara Walshe, Caroline Geiger and Callie Hammond took first with 43 points.
Meanwhile, at the Nickerson Trophy, Stanford finished first in a 17-team field with 68 points.
“The ability to forget frustrating situations and move on with the race is paramount in college sailing," said assistant coach Shawn Harvey. "Tufts is a perfect venue to practice this and our freshmen handled it very well.”
The Card's A boat of Annie Sitzmann and Hannah Crompton finished second with 35 points, while the B boat finished first with 33 points from freshmen Richard Sykes and Estella Morris.
Next week, the Cardinal only has one competition on the schedule. Avery Baldwin and Tommy Sitzmann will each be competing at the ICSA Singlehanded Championships, after winning their PCCSC titles earlier this year to qualify.
