November 29, 1998
STANFORD, Calif. - As two-time defending national champions, the Stanford women's volleyball team will try to become the first school to capture three straight titles and its fifth in the 90s as the Cardinal will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the NCAA Committee announced Sunday evening.
Seeded second in the Mountain Region and eighth overall, Stanford (25-3, 17-1 Pac-10) will play Southeast Missouri State (24-11, 13-5 Ohio Valley) in the second match of the first round at 7:30 p.m., Fri., Dec. 4 at Maples Pavilion. Notre Dame (17-12, 9-2 Big East) and Eastern Washington (24-5, 13-3 Big Sky) will play the first game Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The winners of the Stanford/SE Missouri State and Notre Dame/Eastern Washington will face each other Sat., Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., also at Maples Pavilion.
Long Beach State is seeded first in the Mountain Region, while Texas is third and Illinois fourth.
"Now we just have to go out and play," head coach Don Shaw said. "Whoever wins, wins. It might as well be us."
Stanford is rich in NCAA Tournament history. Not only has the Cardinal claimed four of the last six NCAA titles - more than any other institution - Stanford is one of only four programs that has earned berths in all 18 NCAA Tournaments. Pacific, Penn State and UC Santa Barbara are the other three.
Stanford is also one of four teams that has captured back-to-back crowns, along with UCLA (1990-91), Pacific (1985-86) and Hawaii (1982-83).
In fact, California-based teams have won 12 of the 17 Championship crowns. This year's tournament will feature 13 teams from the state of California.
Broken down by conference, the Pac-10 has captured eight of the 17 titles awarded, including six of the last eight. The Pac-10 will also be represented by Arizona, USC and UCLA in this year's Tournament. Three conferences will send six teams each: the Big-Ten, Big-12 and WAC.
Tickets for the first two rounds will go on sale Mon., Nov. 30 at 9 a.m. Tickets will be sold only as two-day passes until the day of the game. Season ticket holders will have until 4 p.m. Wed., Dec. 2 to retain their season ticket locations. Call 1-800 BEAT CAL to order tickets.
