Stanford Fourth In Early Sears Cup Standings
Cardinal close behind Michigan through three sports.

Stanford University is in fourth place in the initial Sears Directors' Cup standings for the 1999-2000 academic year. The Sears Cup is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding all-around athletic program, based on national finishes in 20 sports for men and women. Stanford is the five-time defending champion.
The initial standings, released Dec. 2, include only points from men's and women's cross country and women's field hockey. The Cardinal recorded a third-place finish in women's cross country and a fourth-place finish in men's cross country, giving Stanford 155 points. Michigan leads with 202, followed by Arkansas (190) and Wisconsin (165). Michigan was the field hockey runner-up and scored in both cross countrys, Arkansas won men's cross country and was second in women's, and Wisconsin was second in men's cross country and fourth in women's.
The standings will be updated again at the conclusion of the fall season, following the final football bowl game on Jan. 4. Stanford will add points in men's water polo (2nd, 50 points), women's soccer (tie-ninth, 30), men's soccer (tie-17th, 10), women's volleyball (still playing in the Sweet 16, at least 30), and possibly football (currently ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today poll, the top 25 in the final poll score points).
