Irvin Advances to NCAA Women's Tennis Quarterfinals
Cardinal freshman has now won 14 straight.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Marissa Irvin advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Championships by defeating
Georgia's Esther Knox at Scott Linder Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
Although the win marked her 14th straight, it was the first time since
the streak began that Irvin was taken to three sets, as she netted a
6-2, 4-6, 6-2 decision over Knox in the Round of 16. Irvin will take on
Wake Forest's Mariel Verban tomorrow, Wed., May 26, at 10 a.m. Verban
advanced after her opponent retired in the third set of their Round of
16 match.
Earlier in the morning, Irvin only took 63 minutes to defeat Texas'
Michelle Faucher 6-0, 6-3 in second-round action
Freshman Gabriela Lastra was also competing in the singles championships
for the Cardinal. She fell to San Diego's Katarina Valkyova in three
sets, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The upset of the day occurred when defending NCAA singles champion
Vanessa Webb of Duke was upset by Georgia's Vanessa Castellano 7-5, 6-2.
