Kremer Advances to Quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic
Venus Williams to take the court for the first time Thursday night.

STANFORD, Calif. - Former Stanford player Anne Kremer advanced to the quarterfinals of the
Bank of the West Classic Wednesday at Stanford University with a 6-2, 6-4
win over Fabiola Zuluaga. Kremer, who led Stanford to the NCAA team title
as a freshman in 1997, then turned pro a year later following her sophomore
season, will play Amy Frazier in the quarterfinals Friday.
In other matches Wednesday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, Frazier
upset fourth-seeded Barbara Schett 6-4, 6-0 to also move into the
quarterfinals. Lindsay Davenport beat Chanda Rubin 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 6-3 and
Amanda Coetzer beat Lisa Raymond 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in other second-round
matches. In first-round matches, Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Maureen Drake
6-2, 6-2 and Patty Schnyder defeated Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles Wednesday, top-seeded Anna Kournikova and Likhovtseva fought off
two match points and rallied from down 5-2 in the third to win 6-7 (8-6),
6-4, 7-6 (7-5) over Catalina Cristea and Anke Huber, and Tamarine
Tanasugarn and Elena Tatarkova defeated Conchita Martinez and Patricia
Tarabini 6-4, 6-4.
Thursday's afternoon schedule begins at noon. Court 1 will have Sandrine
Testud vs. Schnyder and Cara Black/Alicia Molik vs. Coetzer/Kimberly Po.
Court 2 will feature Kournikova vs. Fernandez and Frazier/Katie Schlukebir
vs. Kournikova/Likhovtseva. Schlukebir, like Kremer, was a member of
Stanford's 1997 NCAA Championship team. Thursday's evening session,
beginning at 7:30, will feature second-seeded Venus Williams' first match,
against Katarina Srebotnik, and Jennifer Capriati against Corina Morariu.
