March 28, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - Jeff Mitchell, director of golf at Texas Tech University, today was named the head coach of the men's golf program at Stanford University, Athletic Director Ted Leland announced.

In 1998, Mitchell was elevated to Director of Golf and head coach of both the Red Raider's men's and women's gof programs. He has been the head women's golf coach at Texas Tech since 1990.

Mitchell replaces Wally Goodwin, who has been the head coach at Stanford since 1987. Both Goodwin and Mitchell will complete the 2000 season at their current schools. Mitchell will assume his new role at Stanford on June 16, 2000.

"Stanford has a rich and proud tradition with its men's golf program," said Lelend, "and we conducted a nationwide search to find the candidate who we felt could lead our program to greater heights. In Jeff Mitchell, we feel very fortunate to have a coach with his experience, expertise, integrity and committment. I am looking forward to having Jeff join our staff in June," said Leland.

"I have the utmost respect for Stanford University, the golf program and its past players." Mitchell said. "I am very excited to be joining a program that has been handled so well over the years. "Wally Goodwin has done an exceptional job and I look forward to continuing that tradition," he said. "Dr. Ted Leland and his staff have done a remarkable job at Stanford over the years. They have taken a great program to new heights. The job of head men's golf coach presents itself as a huge opportunity and challenge at the same time. "

In his 10 seasons at Texas Tech (1990-99), Mitchell has led the Red Raiders to numerous berths to the NCAA Regionals, including four in the last five years, and two appearances at the NCAA Tournament. He was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and '96, and named the District Coach of the Year in 1993 and '98.

Mitchell was a member of the Red Raiders golf team from 1974-76. He was All-Southwest Conference and an All-America. Mitchell was a PGA Tour player for nine years. He won the Phoenix Open in 1980, and placed in the top 10 numerous times, including four, third place finishes. He graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in physical education in 1989.

"Right now I have a job to do at Texas Tech University," said Mitchell. "When it is completed, I am eagerly awaiting the chance to create an exciting atmosphere around the Stanford men's golf program," Mitchell said.
