STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Erin Sones (Pasadena, CA/Polytechnic HS) was named the Pac-10 women's Diver of the Year the league office announced Thursday. Freshman McKenze Murphy (Lakeside Park, KY/Dixie Heights HS) was named the Pac-10 women's Newcomer of the Year and Stanford's Rick Schavone was named the Pac-10 women's Coach of the Year as the Cardinal women's diving program swept the conference's awards.
Sones was the Pac-10 champion in the three-meter event this year. It was her first career Pac-10 title. She was also the Pac-10 runner-up in the one-meter competition and placed fourth in the platform diving event. Sones finished third in the three-meter event at the NCAA Championships and also placed 14th in the one-meter.
Murphy had an outstanding debut at her first Pac-10 meet. She finished second in the platform diving at the Pac-10 Championships and was third in the three-meter competition. She was 19th in the one-meter and 23rd in the three-meter at the NCAA Championships.
Schavone, in his 21st season on the Farm, led the Cardinal women to seven top-eight finishes on the three boards at the Pac-10 Championships, including Sones' title. Schavone was also named the Pac-10 women's Coach of the Year in 1995, 1997 and 1999, and was the Pac-10 men's Coach of the Year in 1995. Schavone's student-athletes have earned Pac-10 women's Diver of the Year in five of the last six years, and he also coached the 1995 men's Diver of the Year.
The Conference awards are all voted on by the Pac-10 Coaches.
