The Stanford men's soccer team will host six games this spring to prepare for the upcoming 2000 season. The spring schedule is packed with teams from around the region, including the local MLS team the San Jose Earthquakes and the A-League San Francisco Seals. All games will be played at Stanford's New Maloney Field.
The Cardinal, who went 15-4-3 in the 1999 season, will begin their spring season with an alumni game on April 22 at 2 p.m. Stanford will host 1999 NCAA runner-up Santa Clara on May 6. In 1999, the Broncos knocked Stanford out of the championship hunt in the first round at New Maloney Field in four overtimes and a penalty kick shoot-out.
Despite the loss of three very talented players to graduation, the Cardinal maintains a wealth of talent at every position. Forwards Corey Woolfolk, Brandon Garinger and Luke Rust all return to play their senior season for the Cardinal along with two-time All-American Lee Morrison. Between these four players, they scored 21 of the team's 31 goals last season. Goalkeeper Adam Zapala will also return for his final season in 2000. Zapala owns four school records, including career goals-against average at 0.69, career shutouts with 36, single season In Goal minutes in 1998 with 2,377, and single season goals-against average with 0.57. Last season, Zapala posted nine shutouts and a GAA of 0.67. Midfielder Ryan Nelsen will compete in spring ball when not competing with the New Zealand Under-23 Olympic team, and will rejoin the Cardinal in the fall after the completion of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
