2000 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship Preview

EVENT...The 14th Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Champioships will take place April 24 to April 26 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. Oregon is the Tournament host for the 54-hole Championships.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE...A practice round will take place on Sunday, April 23 before the tournament begins on Monday morning. A three-flight pairing format with groups of three, three, and four teams will be used for the first round of competition. All 10 teams, based upon the coaches' seeding of the squads, have been assigned to a flight via a blind draw. Following are the team seedings:

1. Arizona           6. Washington
2. Arizona State     7. California
3. USC               8. Oregon
4. Stanford          9. Oregon State
5. UCLA              10. Washington State

The teams will play 18 holes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with rounds beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. An awards ceremony and the announcement of the 2000 All-Pac-10 team will follow the completion of the tournament. Per the blind draw, the team pairings are as follows: Flight 1: USC, Washington, & California Flight 2: Arizona State, Stanford, & Oregon State Flight 3: Arizona, UCLA, Oregon, & Washington State

TOURNAMENT SCORING...The three-round competition will be scored by stroke play. Each team will consist of six golfers. One golfer shall be eligible for the individual championship only, and may not contribute to the team score. Four of the remaining five golfers may score for their team.

RANKINGS...As of April 18th, the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings lists all 10 Conference schools in the Top-50. Arizona sits on top for the eighth consecutive week with the No. 1 ranking while No.3 USC, No.4 ASU, and No. 6 Stanford round out the top-10. Teams that follow are UCLA at No. 16, Oregon at No.18, California at No. 22, Washington at No. 37, Oregon State at No. 48, and Washington State at No. 49. Individually, Arizona's Jenna Daniels holds the top spot for the third consecutive week. Miriam Nagl of Arizona State ranks No. 2 and USC's Candie Kung follows at No. 4.

LAST YEAR...Playing on its home course, STANFORD won its first Pac-10 women's golf title in 1999, defeating two-time defending Conference champ ARIZONA by 12 strokes. ARIZONA STATE sophomore Grace Park was the individual medalist, firing a five-under-par 211 to defeat runnerup Hilary Homeyer of Stanford by five strokes (216).

CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW...STANFORD, last year's Pac-10 champion, is ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Cardinal has posted nine top-10 finshes this season...No. 1 ARIZONA looks to capture its sixth consecutive tournament title of the season behind the play of three golfers who rank in the top-25. Jill Gomric ranks 12th, Cristina Baena ranks 8th, and Jenna Daniels ranks as the top golfer in the nation. Daniels leads the Wildcats with a 71.3 stroke average and has placed in the top-10 in all eight tournaments this season. Arizona has placed first or second at the Pac-10 Championships in each of the past four seasons and is looking for its third Conference title...ARIZONA STATE , ranked No. 6 in the nation, won the Spartan Invitational and finished as runners-up at the Arizona Invitational and PING/ASU Invitational earlier this season. Individually, freshman standout Miriam Nagl is ranked No. 2 in the nation and has recorded seven top-10 finishes this year. Nagl took medalist honors in her first collegiate tournament, the Fall Preview...CALIFORNIA is ranked No. 22 nationally. The Golden Bears have eight top-10 finishes this season and are lead by Vicky Laing, a freshman who placed first at the Oregon Invitational and third at the Lady Aztec...OREGON is ranked No. 18 nationally. They have placed second at the Oregon Invitational and Hawaii Golf Classic...OREGON STATE ranks No. 48 in the nation. Junior Carina Olsson carries a 77.8 average and finshed seventh at the Ping /ASU Invitational. Senior Rachel Borcherts is coming off a season-low 71 at the PING/ASU Invitational... 16th ranked UCLA has compiled eight top-10 finishes this season, including a first place finish at the Hawaii Golf Classic. Senior Amanda Moltke-Leth sports a 73.5 stroke average and took home medalist honors at the Peg Barnard Invitational...USC is ranked No. 3 nationally. The Trojans have won titles at the Peg Barnard Invitational and the Edean Ihlandfeldt Invitational. Freshman Candie Kung, ranked No. 4, has recorded six top-10 finishes...WASHINGTON recently recorded its highest finish this year by winning the Peg Barnard Invitational. Sophomore Kelli Kamimura also recorded her highest individual finish here by taking second place...WASHINGTON STATE is ranked No. 49 nationally. The Cougars are led by junior Jennifer Dodd, who recently finished fourth at the Peg Barnard Invitational.
