STANFORD, Calif. - Two-time Olympian and Stanford University women's volleyball great Kim Oden is returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach, Stanford Senior Associate Athletic Director Cheryl Levick announced on Friday.
Oden, who is coming to The Farm on a one-year appointment, will serve as the top assistant to interim head coach Denise Corlett. Oden, who was also a Stanford assistant in 1993, will be involved in working with the middle blockers, recruiting and community service. The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Player of the Decade for the 1980s has also served as an assistant coach at North Carolina, Duke, and most recently, Iowa State.
"It's great to have someone the caliber of Kim back with the program for the 2000 season," Corlett said. "She was one of the best players in the history of our program and all of collegiate women's volleyball, and will be a great role model for our players. Her experience at both the collegiate and international levels will be a huge asset to our program."
The middle blocker was the captain of the bronze medal winning 1992 United States Olympic Women's Volleyball Team, and was also a member of the 1988 squad. The Irvine, California native also played professionally for four years in Europe and was a member of the Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
As a player at Stanford, Oden was named the National Player of the Year in 1984 and 1985 and was later recognized as the Player of the Decade by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Four-Time All-American, 1984 Academic All-America and 1985 recipient of the Honda/Broderick Volleyball Award still holds school records for career blocks (665), blocks in a single season (208, 1983) and blocks in a match (16, Nov. 11, 1984 vs. Hawaii).
