SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Stember, competing in his first 800 meters of the outdoor season, qualified provisionally for the NCAA's with a winning time of 1:48.16 to highlight Stanford's participation in the Bruce Drummond Invitational at Sacramento State.
Stember's time is second-best in the Pac-10 this year. Jess Strutzel of UCLA has the conference's best time of 1:46.57. Stember also ranks second in the Pac-10 in the 1,500 meters this year with a time of 3:40.71 set at the Stanford Invitational on March 26.
Two Cardinal athletes met the Pac-10 qualifying standard in the 1,500 meters. Shaluinn Fullove ran a 4:33.98, while Mariel Ettinger ran a 4:37.01. A third Stanford athlete, Julie Tinker, leaped a career-best 40-7 in the triple jump to qualify for the Pac-10 Championships on May 20-21 at the University of Oregon.
Laura Turner turned in a season-best 9:44.67 in the 3,000 meters to qualify for the conference championships. Turner won the race followed by Anne Gunnison in second place at 9:56.17.
