OJAI, Calif. - Stanford men's and women's tennis players combined to win 23 of their 27 matches on day one of the Pac-10 Individual Championships on Thursday in Ojai.

Stanford had eight men and seven women entered in singles competition, and 11 of those 15 advanced through the first and second rounds and into Friday's quarterfinals. Singles quarterfinals for the men's main draw and invitational begin on Friday at 8:00 a.m., while the women's invitational quarters begin at 8:00 a.m. and the main draw kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Also on Friday, the first and second rounds of the doubles competition in all four divisions (men's and women's main draw, men's and women's invitational) will be held.

In the men's main draw, which consists of the top four players from each of the eight schools that sponsor the sport, three of Stanford's four entrants qualified for Friday's quarterfinals. Stanford junior Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS), who is ranked sixth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is seeded No. 1 in this event, advanced by knocking off Marius Lunde of Washington 6-3, 6-1 in the first round and 87th-ranked Andrew Park of USC 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round. The other Stanford player ranked among the top 10 nationally, eighth-ranked Geoff Abrams (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) cruised into the quarters by routing Joaquin Hamdan of Oregon 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and Ryan Moore of USC 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. In the women's main draw, Stanford advanced three of its five players to the quarterfinals and is assured of at least one semifinalist. Sophomore Lauren Kalvaria advanced to the quarters with a 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-1 win over Washington State's Ana Moura and a 6-3, 7-5 victory over 60th-ranked Annica Cooper of UCLA, while the other two Cardinal entries - 32nd-ranked Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline HS) and 49th-ranked Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) were eliminated in the second round.
