Stanford Womern's Tennis Begins Pac-10 Championship Play Today

Regular Season Report: Stanford clinched its 13th-consecutive Pac-10 title after finishing the season with a perfect 8-0 Conference record. The Cardinal has not lost a Pac-10 match in six years for a 54-0 record during that span. Stanford captured the title with a 7-2 win over No. 8 UCLA at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Stanford finished the regular season with a 25-0 record, which marks the fifth time the Cardinal enter the postseason unbeaten. The weekend sweep of UCLA and USC extended Stanford's win streak to 43 matches, dating back to a 7-2 win over Arizona on March 5, 1999.

500: Stanford head coach Frank Brennan captured his 500th career win on April 8 at USC. Brennan, who is currently in his 20th season with the Cardinal, has a 505-49 (.911) all-time record and 10 NCAA Championships with the Cardinal. His 500th win makes him only the third coach in the history to reach that plateau and places him behind Lin Loring of Indiana (575-160) and Jim Schwitters of Hawaii (507-200-7) on the all-time list and second on the active coaching list behind Loring. During his time at Stanford, Brennan has coached 10 national singles and doubles champions, while leading the Cardinal to 76 straight dual matches between 1988-90.

Quick Notes: Freshman Laura Granville has a 33-2 overall and 17-0 dual record this season... Sophomore Marissa Irvin remains undefeated this season in 19 collegiate matches, while playing in selected professional tournaments. Irvin is ranked No. 2 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and has been as high as No. 81 in the WTA world rankings... Between Granville, Irvin and senior Teryn Ashley, Stanford has yet to lose a match at No. 1 singles... Stanford has a 127-14 dual and a 178-36 overall record in singles... The Cardinal has shutout 11 opponents in dual matches and have held eight other teams to just one point.

Ranking Report: Stanford has been ranked No. 1 in all 13 polls released by the ITA this year. The Cardinal finished the regular season as the only undefeated division I team in the nation and have a commanding 15.41 average lead over No. 2 Georgia. The ITA rankings are based on an average point per match computer formula. Sophomore Marissa Irvin secured the No. 1 singles position for the first time this season, as she remains the only player in the Top 100 that is undefeated. Freshman Laura Granville remained No. 3, with sophomore Lauren Kalvaria at No. 13 and senior Teryn Ashley at No. 32. Sophomore Gabriela Lastra rounds out the singles rankings at No. 49. Three Cardinal doubles team remained in the Top 50. Granville and sophomore Keiko Tokuda are ranked No. 7, with Ashley and Irvin at No. 10. Lastra and Kalvaria advanced 13 spots to No. 24.

Defending Pac-10 Champions: Marissa Irvin captured the 1999 Pac-10 singles championship and teamed with Teryn Ashley to win the doubles title as well. However, Irvin will not make the trip to Ojai to defend her titles this season. Irvin has skipped all the individual collegiate tournaments this season. Irvin will return to action during the first round of the NCAA tournament. Ashley will play in the singles draw of the tournament, but will not take part in doubles.

2000 Pac-10 Championships: The 2000 Pac-10 Championships will be held in conjunction with the 100th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in Ojai, Calif. The Pac-10 women's tennis tournament will take place at the Ojai Valley Inn Tennis Center on Thursday and at Libby Park on Friday beginning at 8 a.m. All nine Pac-10 women's tennis programs will be represented, with 22 of those players holding down spots in the singles Top 100 and 11 doubles teams ranked in the Top 50.

Stellar Rookie Campaign: Freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, Ill.) has had a strong first season with the Cardinal, posting 33-2 overall and 17-0 dual record. One of the highlights of her season came at the 2000 Rolex National Indoor Championship by defeating No. 42 Kristina Kraszewski of Washington 6-3, 6-1 for the title. Granville, the tournament's second seed, followed in the footsteps of Marissa Irvin and Julie Scott to become the third consecutive Stanford player to win the Indoor event. To reach the finals, Granville defeated Dee Dee Herring of SMU (6-0, 6-2), No. 9 Amy Jensen of California (6-1, 6-2), No. 20 Bruno Colosio of LSU (6-0, 6-0) and Petra Gaspar of BYU-Hawaii (6-4, 6-4). The Indoor title is the second for Granville since joining the Stanford tennis team this season. Granville won the Northwest Regional Championship last November. Granville would later hold the No. 1 ranking in the ITA singles poll.

Break-Out Season: The 1999-2000 season has been a break-out year for sophomore Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL). In her second season on The Farm, Kalvaria has surpassed her rookie record of 27-7 by posting a team-leading 34-7 record. Kalvaria posted a solid 21-2 record in dual matches, playing the No. 2-4 spots in the lineup. She won nine straight matches and 15 of her last 17 matches to closeout the season. Kalvaria reached the singles final of the Northwest Regional Championships and for the first time, she took part in the ITA National Indoor Championships where she reached the semifinals.

Pac-10 History: Stanford has had a strangle hold on the Pac-10 singles and doubles tournaments since 1987, winning eight of a possible 13 singles titles and four of 13 doubles titles. Marissa Irvin won the title in 1999 after Julie Scott captured back-to-back titles in 1996 & '97. Lisa Green started the trend with her title in 1988 and followed by Sandra Birch (1989 & 1991), and Debra Graham (1990). Sandra Silva won the 1994 title. In doubles, Meredith McGrath and Teri Whitlinger were the first tandem to grab the championship in 1990. Ania Bleszynski won the doubles title twice, first with Katie Schlukebir in 1995 and again in 1998 with Scott. Irvin and Teryn Ashley captured the last doubles title at the 1999 Pac-10 Championship.
