Stanford, CA - The Stanford women's varsity eight finished third in the Cal Cup grand final on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. Rowing in lane six, the Cardinal women were involved in a three-team battle throughout the entire 2000-meter race with eventual winner Sacramento State and runner-up Gonzaga. Only two and six tenth seconds separated the first and third place boats. Sac State crossed the finish line in 7:00.3, Gonzaga was timed in 7:01.3, and Stanford finished in 7:02.9. Stanford reached the grand final by finishing second in their Saturday heat with a time of 6:58.60, the fourth fastest time of the day.
Competing in the invitation-only Copley Cup, the Stanford varsity men finished fourth in the petite final behind Yale, Oregon State and Columbia. Stanford advanced to the petite final by finishing fifth in their heat on Saturday with a time of 6:13.64.
Also on Sunday, Stanford's novice men finished first in the petite final with a two-second victory over hometown favorite UC San Diego. The novice men missed making the grand final by less than two tenths of second despite having the fifth fastest time in the heats.
The Stanford women's novice eight qualified for the Collegiate Novice grand final by finishing second in the their heat on Saturday. Competing against crew powerhouses like Washington, Cal and Wisconsin, the novice women finished seventh in Sunday's grand final with a time of 7:32.3.
Rounding out the Stanford competition on Sunday, the men's junior varsity eight finished third in the petite final in 6:18.4. Orange Coast (6:10.9) and Oregon State (6:11.4) finished ahead of the Cardinal.
Stanford will be on the road for the second consecutive weekend when they travel to UC Davis on Saturday, April 8-9. The men and women will race UC Davis on Saturday. The Stanford women will also have races against Sacramento State and Kansas State during the weekend.
