Stanford, Calif. - Don Shaw, the winningest coach in NCAA women's volleyball history, announced today that he will take a personal leave of absence from his post at Stanford University. Shaw, who has led the Cardinal to four NCAA championships, is expected to return to The Farm on January 1, 2001.Associate head coach Denise Corlett will assume the position of interim head coach of the Stanford women's volleyball program in Shaw's absence.
Corlett has been on the Stanford women's volleyball coaching staff for the past 11 seasons. She served as Shaw's assistant coach for eight years before being promoted to associate head coach following Stanford's national championship in 1996. The Cardinal has won four NCAA titles and seven Pac-10 championships during Corlett's 11-year association with the program, boasting a 311-42 (.881) record over that period of time.
"I am honored to serve as the interim head coach during Don's leave," said Corlett. "My primary objective is to maintain this program's high level of success."
Shaw completed his 20th season with the Stanford women's volleyball program last December by leading the Cardinal to a second place finish in the NCAA Tournament. He has been Stanford's head coach for the last 14 years after spending two years as a co-head coach and four seasons as an assistant. Shaw has been named National Coach of the Year twice (1991, 1997) and Pac-10 Coach of the Year on three occasions (1987, 1991, 1997). He has an overall record of 440-70 (.863).
