Stanford's Jessica Mendoza Named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Year

Stanford, Calif. -- The Pac-10 Conference announced today that Stanford sophomore OF Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) has been named the 2000 Pac-10 Softball Player of the Year.

Stanford sophomores Sarah Beeson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) and Robin Walker (La Palma, CA/Mater Die HS), along with freshman Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS) were selected second team All-Pac-10. Senior Kellie Wiginton (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) received honorable mention All-Pac-10 recognition.

Mendoza currently leads the nation with a .478 batting average. She also leads the Pac-10 in hits (87) and runs scored (54). Mendoza helped lead the Cardinal to a new school record for wins in a single-season, surpassing the old record of 41 set in 1998. She broke several single-season records this year for Stanford, including home runs (currently 11), stolen bases (currently 17), batting average (currently .478), doubles (currently 19), and hits (currently 87). The sophomore also earned three Pac-10 Player of the Week honors this season. Mendoza, who earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors last season, is the first Stanford player to ever be named Pac-10 Player of the Year.
