Stanford, Calif. - Stanford junior right-handed pitcher Justin Wayne(Honolulu, HI/The Punahou School) has been named a USA Today Baseball WeeklyFirst Team All-American, the magazine announced Wednesday. He is also one of12 semifinalists for the Rotary Smith Award given annually to the top playerin collegiate baseball.
"This is a great honor for a student-athlete that is deserving of national recognition," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess.
Wayne has compiled an 11-3 record and a 3.10 ERA this season. Heco-leads the Pac-10 in victories, ranking tied for sixth in the nation. Hepaces the Cardinal in strikeouts (120), innings pitched (107.1, co-Pac-10leader) and complete games (4).
He has compiled a 27-4 overall record in his third season at Stanford,ranking third on the school's all-time winning percentage list (.871). Waynealso ranks among Stanford's all-time leaders in strikeouts (3rd, 330) andwins (6th-T, 27).
Wayne's other honors this season include a National Player of the Weekselection by Collegiate Baseball (3/6) and a pair of Pac-10 Pitcher of theWeek honors (3/7, 4/3). Wayne was also named a preseason All-American thisyear by both Baseball America (second team) and Collegiate Baseball (thirdteam).
