Three Stanford Softball Players Named To NFCA All-America Team

May 24, 2000

Stanford, Calif. -- Stanford sophomore Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS), along with sophomore Sarah Beeson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro HS) and freshman Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS), were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America team today.

Mendoza, the 2000 Pac-10 Softball Player of the Year, earned First Team All-America honors as an outfielder after leading the nation in hitting with a .475 average. Mendoza, who last season became the first Stanford player to be selected First Team All-America, broke six Stanford single-season records this season, including batting average (.475), hits (94), doubles (20), home runs (13), runs (57) and stolen bases (20). Mendoza earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors three times this season.

For Beeson, it's her first time being honored by the NFCA. Beeson earned Second Team All-America honors as a first baseman, after concluding the season with a .337 batting average, five home runs and a team leading 53 RBI. Beeson played in all of Stanford's 63 games and earned Pac-10 Second Team All-Conference honors.

Sorensen posted a 22-9 record for the Cardinal on her way to Second Team All-America At-Large honors as a pitcher. Sorensen pitched 211.2 innings in her rookie campaign, making 35 appearances and 34 starts. Already, Sorensen tops the Stanford career list with a 1.06 ERA and is third on the Stanford career strikeout list with 164. Sorensen was named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team last month.
