Women's Water Polo Ends 2000 Season with a Third Place Finish at Nationals

The Final Roundup: The Stanford women's water polo team posted a record of 28-5 in the 2000 season, the best record since becoming a varsity sport in 1996. The team tied for first place in the MPSF with a record of 8-1, and took first place at the MPSF Tournament, defeating then-No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Cal to take the Conference Championships. The Cardinal also won the Northern California Regional Qualifier, defeating Cal 3-2 in overtime to advance to the National Championships. The Cardinal's record gave the squad a No. 1 seeding going into the National Championships. At Nationals, Stanford defeated Harvard 17-6 and Princeton 17-7 in the first two rounds of the Championships. In the semifinals, USC beat Stanford 10-5 to eliminate the Cardinal from the Championship game. In the final game of the 2000 season, the Cardinal defeated Cal 8-5 to take third place at the National Championships.

Stanford at the Nationals: Stanford has gone to the National Championships every year since gaining varsity status in 1996. As a club sport, the Cardinal won the National Championships in 1985, and finished second in 1986. In 1996, the Cardinal finished fifth at Nationals. In 1997, the team finished fourth, and in 1998 the squad placed third. Last year, the team finished second, falling to USC 7-6 in five overtimes--the longest game in the history of the Championships.

Stanford in the rankings: The Cardinal finished the 2000 season ranked third in the nation. The team finished third at nationals after falling to USC 10-5 in the semifinals. Stanford had been ranked at No. 1 for five consecutive weeks. The Cardinal moved from a third-place ranking to first after defeating top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 California in the MPSF Tournament. The squad defended their No. 1 ranking when they won the Northern California Regional Qualifier, hosted by Cal. The Cardinal defeated Cal 3-2 in overtime to win the Regionals and advance to the National Championships.

Stanford at the National Qualifier: Stanford went 2-0 to win the Northern California Regional Qualifier and advance to the National Championships. In the first game, the Cardinal defeated UC Davis 10-1 on Friday, April 21. Dingeldein, Gardner and Shouey each scored two goals. The team then went on to beat Cal 3-2 in overtime in the championship game to take the Regional title and advance to the National Championships with a No. 1 seeding. Julie Gardner scored two goals in the win over the Golden Bears, including the one in overtime which gave Stanford the victory. Junior Kris Koblik scored one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Frank made 10 saves against Davis and 15 against Cal to keep the Golden Bears scoreless in the first three periods of play.

The 2000 Season: Stanford water polo recorded a strong season in 2000, taking first place in the Conference, and recording a third place showing at the National Championships. With a record of 28-5, the best record in the history of the program, here is a recap of the matches the Cardinal competed in this season.
UC San Diego Tournament 2/11-2/13 -- Stanford opened the 2000 season at the UCSD Tournament. At the three-day event, Stanford went 4-2 and took fourth place. The Cardinal defeated San Jose State 11-1, UC Santa Barbara 9-6, UC San Diego 14-1 and handed eventual tournament champion UCLA their only loss of the weekend 5-3. Stanford recorded their first loss of the season in the championship play-off game when Cal won 5-4. The cardinal then lost to USC in the consolation game 5-4 to take fourth place in the tournament.
San Jose State 2/19 -- Stanford defeated MPSF foe San Jose State 6-3 in the first conference match of the 2000 season. The Cardinal scored three times in the first quarter. Sophomore Kate Pettit, junior Hilary Gallogly and sophomore Margie Dingeldein each scored one goal to give Stanford the early lead. The Spartans got on the board in the final minutes of the first period, but could get no closer then 3-2 through the game to Stanford's lead. Pettit led the team in goals with two. Goalkeeper Jackie Frank defended the net for the Cardinal and made 13 saves.
The UC Santa Barbara Tournament 2/25-2/26 -- The Cardinal finished second at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament after falling to Bay Area rival Cal 8-7 in overtime in the championship game. Stanford defeated No. 1 UCLA 5-4 to reach the tournament championships. In the first day of the tournament, the team beat Loyola Marymount 13-2 and San Jose State 10-7.
USC 3/3 -- Stanford defeated fourth-ranked USC 7-6 in three overtimes Friday, march 3 in the Cardinal's second conference game of the season. In a game reminiscent of the National Championship game last year, which Stanford lost 7-6 in five overtimes to USC, Friday's match saw the Trojans and the Cardinal battle through three overtimes before Stanford came away victorious. Freshman Julie Gardner scored the winning goal to give Stanford its second MPSF victory of the season and hand USC its first conference loss.
Aloha Classic 3/4-3/5 -- Stanford won its first tournament in Hawaii as the Cardinal handily defeated No. 14 Michigan 15-2, No. 8 San Jose State 10-3, and No. 6 Hawaii 14-3. The game against Hawaii was also an MPSF Conference match, giving Stanford its third conference win of the season. Sophomore Margie Dingeldein was named the tournament MVP, and the MPSF Player of the Week after scoring seven goals in the three games.
UCLA 3/19 -- Despite the Bruins jumping out ahead to take a 4-1 lead in the second quarter, the Cardinal fought back to take the win. Stanford dominated the third quarter, scoring three goals while keeping UCLA scoreless. The Cardinal held on to the lead, and took the match 9-7.
Pacific 3/23 -- Stanford defeated MPSF foe Pacific 9-3 at the Cardinal's season home opener. Margie Dingeldein, Kelly Shouey and Julie Gardner each scored two goals in the win over the Tigers. Alli Henry defended the net for the Cardinal and was able to hold Pacific scoreless for the first two periods of play.
Cal 3/26 -- The Golden Bears knocked Stanford out of the race for first place in the MPSF when Cal visited the Cardinal at deGuerre pool. Cal defeated the Cardinal 6-3, making Stanford 0-3 against the Bears this season. The loss was Stanford's first in the MPSF. Dani Bell, Anne-Marie Keenan and Julie Gardner each scored one goal for Stanford.
UCSB 3/29 -- The Cardinal took an 8-1 first half lead in the 13-5 victory over the Gauchos. Margie Dingeldein scored a team and season-high six goals.
Long Beach State 3/31 -- Stanford defeated the 49ers 13-8 at deGuerre pool. The Cardinal jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven goals to the Beach's two in the first half. The 49ers attempted a comeback in the fourth period, scoring four goals, but Stanford held on to the lead to win 13-8.
San Diego State 4/1 -- In the last home game of the season, Stanford recorded a narrow 7-6 victory over the Aztecs. Julie Gardner, Margie Dingeldein and Kris Koblik each scored two goals for the Cardinal.
MPSF Tournament 4/7-9 -- Stanford went 5-0 to earn the MPSF Championship title at the Conference Tournament. The Cardinal defeated No. 7 Hawaii 14-2 and No. 18 Pacific 18-3 on Friday, April 7. Junior Kris Koblik scored a team-high four goals against the Tigers. On Saturday, Stanford took a 9-6 victory over No. 6 San Diego State, with Margie Dingeldein scoring four goals. The Cardinal defeated top-ranked UCLA 7-6 to earn a berth into the Championship game against Cal. On Sunday, the Cardinal and the Golden Bears faced off for the Conference title. Julie Gardner and Kris Koblik scored two goals each to lead Stanford to a 6-4 victory and the MPSF Championship.
UC Davis 4/15 -- In the Cardinal's last game of the regular season, Stanford defeated the Aggies 7-3. Anne-Marie Keenan scored a game high three goals. Kelly Shouey contributed two, and Julie Gardner and Nicole Huszcz added one each to give Stanford a final record of 23-4.

Aquatic Assault: Sophomore driver Margie Dingeldein led the Cardinal in scoring with 59 goals, and was named a First Team All-America selection by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. She was also a First-Team All-Conference selection after scoring 10 goals at the Conference Championships. Dingeldein was named the MPSF Player of the Week after scoring seven goals in the Aloha Classic to lead the team to a 3-0 record and the tournament title, which also earned her tournament MVP honors. She led the team to a 13-5 routing of MPSF foe UC Santa Barbara with six goals. Dingeldein has scored in 25 of the team's 33 games, and has recorded multiple goals in 20 of them. Freshman two-meter set/driver Julie Gardner was second on the team in scoring with 57 goals, and earned Third Team All-America honors. Gardner was named the MPSF Player of the Week for the week of March 20th after scoring two timely goals to lead the Cardinal to victory over No. 3 UCLA. She scored 13 goals at the MPSF tournament, including two in the 6-4 win over Cal in the Championship game. Gardner has scored in 28 of the team's 33 games, and had a 24 game scoring streak before it ended in the loss to USC in the National Championships. At the National Championships, Gardner scored seven goals, including three in the 8-5 win over Cal in the third-place game. Junior two-meter set Kelly Shouey was fourth on the team with 30 goals this season. She earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades. At the National Championships, she scored three goals in the 17-7 win over Princeton, and one in the 10-5 loss to USC in the semifinal game. Junior driver Dani Bell was fifth on the team with 29 goals. Sophomore two-meter set Kate Pettit finished the season with 22 goals despite being sidelined for part of the season with a hand injury. The Cardinal offense recorded 262 goals this season, over twice as many as their opponents.

A Versatile Defense: Cardinal in the back of the pool did an outstanding job on both sides of the ball this season. Not only did the defense limit the opposition to only 149 goals, but they got on the offensive, helping the team score 309 goals. Two-meter defender Ann-Marie Keenan finished the season third on the team in goals scored with 33. Her efforts in the 2000 season earned her Honorable Mention All-America honors. She scored a game-high three goals to lead the Cardinal to a 7-3 victory over UC Davis in the final game of the regular season. Junior Kris Koblik finished the season with 24 goals, good for fifth on the team, and was awarded Third Team All-America honors. Koblik, who plays at two-meter defender and driver, scored two goals in the 6-4 win over Cal in the MPSF Championship game, and one goal in the 3-2 ot win over Cal in the Regional Qualifier. Hilary Gallogly, also a two-meter defender, was eighth on the team in goals with 18. Junior Ali Riddell recorded 15 goals, freshman Nicole Huszcz scored ten, and fellow frosh Amy Lightner recorded nine.

In Goal: The Cardinal boasted two very strong defenders in the net this season. Junior Alli Henry and redshirt freshman Jackie Frank did a great job defending the goal for the Cardinal in the 2000 season, allowing only 149 goals in 33 games and recording a goals-against average of 4.41. The opponents goalkeepers have allowed 309 goals and have a GAA of 9.15 against the Cardinal. Frank returns to Stanford after redshirting last season to train with the US National Team. She has played in 27 games for 601 minutes and has a GAA of 4.65. She was named a Second Team All-America selection for her efforts this season. Henry has played in 15 games for 260 minutes, and has a GAA of 3.77. Frank played in all four games at the National Championships, including the 8-5 win over Cal in the third-place game, where she made seven saves to help Stanford to the win.

The 2000 season: Fifth on the team with 29 goals... Scored three goals in four separate games this season, the first in the 13-2 win over Loyola Marymount in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, then in a 13-8 victory over MPSF foe Long Beach State, and in an 18-3 decision over Pacific in the MPSF Tournament... Scored six goals in all four games of the National Championships, including three in the 17-6 win over Harvard in the first round.

Helped limit the opponent to a total of 149 goals, less than half of the number of Stanford goals... Head Coach John Tanner

John Tanner finishes his third season at the helm of the Stanford women's water polo program with a record of 28-5, the best record in the history of the program, and a third place finish at Nationals. In his first year as head coach in 1997, Tanner led Stanford to a 29-6 record and a third place finish at the Collegiate National Championship. Last season the team ended the season with a 25-6 record and tied for first in the MPSF. The Cardinal made a run at the Collegiate National Champion title, and fell just short, losing to USC 7-6 in five overtimes, the longest game in the history of the championship. Stanford ended the 1999 season as the National Runners-up. Tanner has a coaching record at Stanford of 82-17, and a career coaching record of 229-189 including the 2000 season.
