WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Stanford women's water polo team swept the top honors in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation postseason awards. Brenda Villa was named the Co-Player of the Year and Jackie Frank garnered Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Head coach John Tanner was also selected as the MPSF Coach of the Year.
The Cardinal also placed three players on the All-MPSF First Team and three on the Honorable Mention team. Joining Villa and Frank on the First Team was junior Ellen Estes. Sophomore Julie Gardner, senior Anne-Marie Keenan and junior Margie Dingeldein were honorable mention selections. Dingeldein has earned all-conference honors for three consecutive years while Gardner picks up her second all-conference award. This is Keenan's first MPSF honor.
Villa, a freshman driver from Commerce, Calif., shared the Player of the Year award with USC's Sophia Konukh. Villa led the Cardinal in scoring with 69 goals. In the net, Frank recorded 151 saves in 25 games. She was named the MVP of the MPSF Tournament as well as the NCAA Championship.
Tanner, who just completed his fourth year on The Farm, sports a 99-18 overall record at Stanford. He led the Cardinal to the first-ever perfect regular season in collegiate women's water polo this year (26-0), before falling in the national title game.
Stanford tied with Cal for the most selections with six while UCLA and USC both had four selections each.
