Nebraska Wins Opener, 3-1, Over BYU

STANFORD, Calif. - Second-seeded Nebraska scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth to defeat fifth-seeded Brigham Young 3-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Regional at Stanford's Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium on Thursday morning. The Huskers improve to 50-13 while the Cougars fall to 35-25. Nebraska will next play on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of the Pacific-Central Michigan game. BYU plays again today at 4:30 against the Stanford-Hofstra loser.

The Huskers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Danielle Arnold led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Then Leigh Sur's grounder to short was thrown wild, allowing Arnold to score. Sur added another run for Nebraska on a delayed steal while Nicole Trimboli advanced to second.

The Cougars cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Brooke Cadiente drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on an error and scored on Lindsey Kelly's single to right center.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nebraska took a 3-1 lead. Amanda Buchholz led off with a walk and moved to second on Cindy Roethmeyer's sacrifice bunt. Then Buchholz scored when Arnold's ground ball to short was thrown wild.

For Nebraska in the circle, Leigh Ann Walker started and went four innings. She gave up one run on two hits while striking out two and walking a pair. She improves to 22-6 with the win. Peaches James came on in relief in the fifth and pitched three innings to earn her third save of the year. She allowed just one hit and struck out three.

BYU's Maryon Wallentine went six innings giving up three runs on five hits. She struck out five and walked one in the loss. Wallentine falls to 17-16.
