COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Stanford University men's tennis team begins play at the 2002 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Wednesday at Texas A&M University. The Cardinal has three singles entrants and one doubles entrant in the championship.

In doubles, juniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) received the No. 2 seed in the 32-team bracket. Lipsky and Martin will face Tennessee's Simon Rea and Mario Toledo in opening round action on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. (PT).

In the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship that begins Wednesday, the Cardinal will be represented by juniors Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Aiken HS), Lipsky and Martin.

Martin is in the upper half of the bracket and will face BYU's Gert Vilms on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. (PT). Haviland and Lipsky are both on the bottom half of the draw, with Lipsky competing at 10:30 a.m. and Haviland at 11:00 a.m. Lipsky will take on Florian Marquardt of Virginia Commonwealth, while Haviland faces seventh-seeded Romain Ambert of Mississippi State.

Stanford's NCAA contingent was to originally include senior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, CA), but the three-time All-American was forced to withdraw from both the singles and doubles draws because of a back injury.
