Columus, Ohio - The Golf Coaches Association of America honored the top student-athletes and coaches in college golf at it National Awards Dinner Monday night. The association presented awards including Team Effort Regional Champion Awards, Softspikes All-Freshman Team, Region Coaches of the Year, PING All-Region Teams and Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars. The Cardinal had two players honored for their excellence both on and off the field.
Philip Rowe and Blake Mastalir were both recognized as All-American Scholar Athletes while Rowe was also a Pacific-All Region selection.
"I am so proud of Phil and Blake," said Stanford head coach Jeff Mitchell. "Being an Academic All-American is something they can look back on all of their lives with pride. It shows a huge commitment on their part to academics and athletics. Not only did they have to make high grades, but they had to play in 66% of the team competitions and have a stroke average below 75.
"I am especially happy for Phil, who ends his career as a second and a first team ALL PAC-10 member the past two seasons," Mitchell continued. "He was first team academic Pac-10 for the past two years."
The top 12-15 players in each region received recognition for outstanding play during the 2001- 02 season, and will be considered for PING All-America status following the NCAA Championships. Players not selected to a PING All-Region team can earn All-America honors by finishing in the top 15 at nationals.
