OJAI, Calif. - Stanford University freshman Joanna Kao (Fullerton, CA) reached the semifinals of the Pacific-10 Conference Women's Tennis Invitational on Friday morning at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
Kao won by default over Nora Gaal of Washington State because of illness. The Cardinal freshman, who won two matches on Thursday, will face Nicole Havlicek of California in Saturday's semifinals.
In the Pac-10 Singles Championship, Stanford's Alice Barnes (Cambridge, U.K.) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) were both bounced in the quarterfinals. The 37th-ranked Burdette fell to sixth-ranked Emilie Scribot of Arizona 6-3, 6-1, while the eighth-rankedBarnes was forced to retire because of injury while down 3-4 in the first set to seventh-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones of California.
The injury to Barnes also forced the withdrawal of Stanford's lone entrant in the championship flight. Burdette and Barnes defaulted to Debbie Larocque and Kristy Randono of Arizona.
The Pac-10 Individual Championships continue on Saturday in Ojai with the singles semifinals at 9:30 a.m. and the doubles semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Consolation bracket action will also take place on Saturday.
