Woodland, Calif. - Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) coaches tabbed Stanford goalkeeper Jackie Frank the MPSF Tournament MVP. Frank collected 22 saves as the Cardinal won the 2003 MPSF Championship in a 3-2 fifth sudden-victory overtime win over UCLA. Seniors Julie Gardner and Brenda Villa were also named to the MPSF All-Tournament Team.
Frank recorded another amazing weekend in the Stanford goal as she limited UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State and UCLA to a combined four goals in her three games while picking up 32 saves. Frank's 22 saves against UCLA, including a four-meter penalty shot in the third quarter, helped advance the Cardinal to the NCAA Championship on May 10-11 in San Diego. The senior keeper collected 179 saves this season and has allowed on 58 goals in her 21 games (2.76 gaa).
Gardner netted two quick goals for the Cardinal against Long Beach State in the first semifinal match and finished the match with a game-high three goals. Gardner also tallied one goal against UC Santa Barbara on the first day of the Tournament. She is second on the team in scoring with 22 goals in 2003. Villa posted a four-goal game against the Gauchos in the Cardinal's first game of the MPSF Tournament before adding three against the 49ers. Villa leads the team with 42 goals in her final season.
Frank, Gardner and Villa were also named to the MPSF First Team, with Villa picking up Player of the Year honors and Frank earning Goalie of the Year honors.
Stanford will face fourth-seeded Indiana in the first NCAA Semifinal match at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th in San Diego.
