Gainesville, Fla. - Freshman Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) was Stanford's lone winner in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships this afternoon in Gainesville, Florida. Liu, seeded fifth, will meet Jessica Roland of Texas A&M at 10:30 a.m. (ET) tomorrow in the second round of the 64-player event.
Liu recorded a straight set victory over Florida's Julie Rotondi, 6-4, 6-3. Her second round opponent, Roland, defeated Allicia Pillay of Tulsa 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to advance.
Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ), Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) and Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK) all dropped straight set first round matches. Barnikow was defeated by No. 9-16 seed Mira Radu of Ole Miss, 6-0, 6-1. Cal's Christina Fusano beat Burdette 6-2, 6-2 and Dea Sumantri of Washington upset No. 9-16 seed Barnes 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Top-seed Barnikow and Burdette will begin their quest for a doubles title tomorrow against Virginia's Jennifer Tuchband and Henriette Williams.
