Stanford has won 12 of its last 13 games overall, as well as 12 of its past 13 series, and wrapped up its ninth consecutive 40-win campaign by taking the first two games of its current series versus Cal Poly ... Stanford has clinched its first outright Pac-10 title since 1999 (Stanford shared the Pac-10 crown with Arizona State and UCLA in 2000) by finishing with an 18-6 conference record after winning eight of its last nine conference games and posting an 11-1 road record in Pac-10 play ... Stanford has won 19 conference championships (17 Pac-10, includes Southern Division and shared titles) in school history and finished either first or second in the conference 21 times in the last 23 years ... Stanford is now among the nation's top five teams in all four major national polls after jumping two spots to No. 5 in both the latest Baseball America and Sports Weekly/ESPN polls released May 19 ... Ryan Garko, a Johnny Bench Award national semifinalist and Pac-10 Player of the Year candidate, is the team's leader in homers (15), RBI (78), hits (84), total bases (148), slugging percentage (.708), multiple-hit games (26), multiple-RBI games (23), sacrifice flies (6), extra-base hits (34) and on-base percentage (.488) ... Garko has hit safely in 27 of his last 32 games (.483, 56-116) and hit 10 homers with a league-high 39 RBI in 24 Pac-10 games ... Carlos Quentin ranks second on the team with a .387 batting average ... Quentin, who was named one of five finalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award on May 6 and one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Smith Award on May 16 ... Quentin has hit safely in 39 of his last 42 games (.412, 70-170) ... Quentin paces the team in doubles (23), walks (33) and hit-by-pitches (12) ... at Stanford 9, Cal Poly 4 (May 23, 2003)
Stanford captured a 9-4 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a non-conference series played before a season-high crowd of 4017 that was treated to fireworks after the game. John Hudgins picked up his ninth victory of the season and the 20th of his career, limiting the Mustangs to one unearned run and three hits over the first 6.0 innings.
Brian Hall (3-5, 2B, SB) had three hits to pace Stanford's 13-hit attack, while Donny Lucy (2-3, 2 RBI), Ryan Garko (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Jed Lowrie (2-4, 2B, RBI) had a pair of hits each.
Cal Poly starter Josh Kougl (1-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits over the first 6.0 innings.
Scott Anderson was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Mustangs, while Billy Saul (2-4, RBI) also had a pair of hits and Cory Tallion drove in two runs.
Garko struck out twice in the contest, going down swinging in the third and seventh innings, to break a streak of 81 consecutive official at bats and 23 games without a strikeout.
at Stanford 12, Cal Poly 0 (May 24, 2003)
Stanford extended its string of 40-win seasons to nine in a row with a 12-0 shutout victory over Cal Poly. Mark Romanczuk (10-0) became the first Pac-10 pitcher to reach to win 10 games this season, while Matt Manship recorded his eighth save to move into a tie for the Pac-10 lead and secure Stanford's fourth shutout of the season. Ryan Garko (4-4, HR, 3 RBI) continued his phenomenal season by setting a new single-season career-high with his 15th homer. Tobin Swope and John Hester also hit their first career home runs in the victory.
The Cardinal won for the 12th time in its last 13 games and also assured its 12th series victory in its last 13 three-game sets.
Garko also tied a career-high with four hits and drove in three runs as he increased his season RBI total to 78, fifth on Stanford's all-time single season list. In addition, Garko raised his season batting average to a team-leading .402 and is making a run to become only the sixth Stanford player to hit .400 or better in a season and the first since David McCarty batted .420 in 1991.
Danny Putnam (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) added three hits with a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Cardinal. Sam Fuld extended his hit streak to 13 games with his ninth triple of the season to lead off the bottom of the first inning, leaving him one shy of the school's single-season triple record of 10 set by Jack Shepard in 1953. The triple was also the 15th of Fuld's career, moving him into a tie for fourth on Stanford's all-time list. In addition, Fuld was hit twice and stole a base. Brian Hall (2-3, RBI) continued his hot hitting by extending his hit streak to a career-high-tying eight games and his string of consecutive multiple-hit contests to six. Jed Lowrie tied a career-high with three RBI.
Romanczuk struck out eight batters while allowing just four hits and one walk over the first 6.0 innings before Manship limited the Mustangs to two hits with two strikeouts over the final 3.0 innings.
Kyle Wilson (2-4) was the only Cal Poly player with more than one hit. Wilson also had 16 putouts defensively at first base.
Mustang starter Garrett Olson (5-3) took the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits over the first 3.2 innings.
STANFORD-CAL POLY SERIES HISTORYStanford has a six-game win streak over the Mustangs and leads the all-time series, 42-5 (since 1949), after winning the first two games of the series. Stanford won Friday night's series opener, 9-4, before posting a 12-0 shutout on Saturday. Last year, the Cardinal swept a three-game set at Sunken Diamond (March 1-3; W, 8-6; W, 18-5; W, 11-3). In 2001, the teams split a pair of games with the Cardinal pulling out an 11-10 win at Sunken Diamond (5/8) and Cal Poly taking the 2001 season-opener for both teams in San Luis Obispo, 6-5 in 12 innings.
