Indianapolis, In - Michael Derse, who helped lead Stanford to the championship game of the 2003 NCAA Water Polo Tournament, and Adam Tenforde, who helped lead Stanford to the 2003 NCAA cross country championship, have been named winners of $7,500 NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships for Fall Sports.
Derse and Tenforde are among 29 Division I & II athletes to win post-graduate scholarships for excellence in the classroom. Derse, a senior from Ventura, Ca, will graduate in June with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, while Tenforde will obtain his degree in Human Biology.
Derse helped lead Stanford to a 22-5 record this year and to the championship game of the NCAATournament. Derse scored 27 goals and gained second team All-American (American Water Polo Coaches Association) and All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second team honors.
Tenforde, a five-time All-American in track and cross country from Richland, Wa, helped lead Stanford to the 2003 NCAA title in cross country. In one of the most dominating performances in NCAA history, the Stanford men's cross country team beat runnerup Wisconsin by 150 points, the largest margin of victory in NCAA Division I history.
