Stanford, Calif. - The Southern Illinois University softball team defeated #16-ranked Fresno State on Thursday afternoon, 2-0, behind a four-hitter by Amy Harre in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Salukis (43-15) will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT against the winner of today's Auburn-Hofstra game.
The Salukis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Lauren Roney delivered a two-out single that drove home Haley Viefhaus. They scored their second run in the top of the sixth as Jenny Doehring led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Katie Jordan, and scored on a Viefhaus single.
Harre (20-6) took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth. She retired the first two batters in the sixth before yielding consecutive singles.
Fresno State (47-19) had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, however Harre induced Veronica Green to ground out to end the game. The Bulldogs will play tonight against the loser of the Auburn-Hofstra game in the double-elimination tournament.
For SIU, Haley Viefhaus went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI while Lauren Roney went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
For the Bulldogs, Christina Clark, Lori Hoffman, Mitzi Ing and Shasta Lewis each collected one hit.
Amy Harre (20-6) picked up the win for Southern Illinois, pitching a complete game four-hit shutout with six strikeouts. Jamie Southern (29-6) took the loss for Fresno State, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
