Stanford had a school record-tying six players taken in the recent NFL Draft, which places the Cardinal first in the Pacific-10 Conference and tied for fourth nationally. Only Oklahoma, Florida State, Virginia and Wisconsin had more players taken in the draft than Stanford.
The Cardinal, which had six players taken in the 2002 Draft, have had six players selected in the professional draft on eight occasions throughout its history, but only twice (2002, 2005) have the Cardinal had six players taken in the first seven rounds.
Nationally, Stanford was indeed among the elite with six selections. Oklahoma led the way with 11 players drafted, followed by Florida State with nine, Virginia and Wisconsin with seven apiece and Stanford, Georgia and Louisville with six each.
In the Pac-10, Stanford was tops in the league, followed by Cal and USC with five, UCLA with four, Oregon State, Washington State and Arizona State with three each and two apiece from Oregon and Washington.
Stanford has three players chosen in the third round - Oshiomogho Atogwe, Alex Smith and Stanley Wilson - marking the first time since 1993 that the Cardinal had three picks in the first three rounds. In the last four years (2002-05), Stanford has had 19 players chosen in the NFL Draft.
