Stanford's Doubles Duos Advance to Quarterfinals

May 25, 2005

Athens, Ga. - After a tough morning in the singles championship, Stanford rebounded with a pair of wins in doubles as both Cardinal tandems earned a spot in the quarterfinals. Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette defeated the top-seeded team in the tournament to advance, while Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey defeated one of the 5-8 seeded teams this afternoon.

In doubles, Barnes and Burdette faced the task of playing top-seeded Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson of Georgia. Earlier this season, Barnes and Burdette defeated the Bulldog duo 8-3 during the team indoors dual match in Madison, Wis. Nearly four months later, the squads faced off again and it took three sets to determine a winner, but the Cardinal came out on top again, winning a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 decision to knock off the top-seeded tandem.

Liu and Yelsey also squared off against a top-seeded opponent, as they faced No. 5-8 Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan of Florida. The Cardinal pair posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory to earn a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

In singles, both Theresa Logar and Yelsey were edged in the Round of 16 this morning. Logar dropped a two-set match to TCU's StoryTweedie-Yates, who is seeded No. 9-16. Yelsey was knocked out by Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova in a three-set heartbreaker.

Tomorrow, Barnes and Burdette will take on Virginia Commonwealth's Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova, while Liu and Yelsey will challenge fourth-seeded Daniella Bercek and Riza Zalameda of UCLA.
